(Linux newbie here!!)

Folks,
I've done an install of the newest R5F27.

I'm wanting to set this box up as a backend only. No frontend running on it at all. When doing the install I see every option but this...

I have my backend setup and running and this box will just sit in the basement plugged into the switch.

Is there a way I can tell KnoppMyth not to run the frontend or remove the frontend?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx,
Aqua

Hi,

Why is it so important to shut down / remove the front end? It is a little tricky to set things up without it..

What, if any, performance gain would be close nil. Suppose you could escape to the desktop and do some testing to actually measure it. I run a Dell 400 mhz (could be a 600mhz, I forget) fe/be without issues on a 350 card and it is doing other work for me along the way.

Just to add in a couple of insights...

The BE should have the front end running, just in case you want to make a couple of changes here and there.

It doesn't really draw in the resources....so the BE should run both.

Same setup here, didn't need/want the frontend running on the MBE in the basement, so I commented out the line in /etc/inittab that starts X - On R5F27 it should look like
Code:
c7:2345:respawn:/usr/bin/openvt -fwc 6 -- /bin/su - mythtv -c /usr/bin/startx >& /dev/null
No X, no frontend (and more resources available for commflagging, transcoding, etc...)

If you need X or the frontend at some point you can start it manually by issuing the above command or un-commenting the line in inittab and rebooting.
