Has anyone had any success installing on a laptop. I would like to install onto an IBM T23. Not sure how I would get the video into the USB or PCMCIA. Constructive suggestions are appreciated.

Edit: Oh, you seem to be wanting to install backend too...
That is a much larger issue and you hit the nail on the head.
The issue will be video capture. USB 2.0 would seem to be
the way to go. I don't think USB 1.x will be fast enough.
Laptop hard drives are not very fast or big either. An external
USB 2.0 hard drive mounted as /myth would be the way to go.

I've installed mythtv-frontend on two Ubuntu laptops and had
no problems with either (that I remember). I have Wifi on both
and they make such a great second TV that we use them as
a primary TV.

I really recommend installing Ubuntu and then installing
mythtv-frontend from synaptic (or apt-get). It works good
and you can still use your laptop for other things, especially
vacation oriented, like internet, music, digital picture storage,
etc.

The one issue with this at this point is that KnoppMyth is
currently MythTV 0.20 and the latest Ubuntu is MythTV 0.21
and they don't mix. I hear that connecting an 0.21 FE to an
0.20 BE will prompt you for to upgrade and if you say yes, your
BE will have problems.

Supposedly, very shortly, KnoppMyth 5.5 will be released,
which will be MythTV 0.21 and this issue will go away.

If you want to use Ubuntu, you need to install the previous
version (7.10 aka Gutsy) AND force the install of the
last 0.20 version of mythtv-frontend (or wait till release 5.5 of
KnoppMyth comes out, at which point the latest
mythtv-frontend is what you want).

From a root prompt in gutsy (7.10):
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install mythtv-frontend=0.20.2*

If you wait to use KM R5.5 then do this from either gutsy or hardy:
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install mythtv-frontend

Both of these sets of instructions will download and install
all the mythtv stuff and will ask you if it is OK to install maybe
30 or so other packages. Answer yes. Warning I have not
installed this since Ubuntu went to 0.21 so do it first thing
after getting the network running in case (<1%) it blows up.

On any front end only install if you can mount the FE's /myth
to the BE's /myth via the network (and accessible from the
mythtv user) you get other good things like playing your myth
videos just like you do from the BE/FE.

Good luck if you are still out there.
