Post subject: | MythArchive Audio just noise |
After upgrading to Knoppmyth 5.5, I've attempted to use MythArchive twice. This is a component of the system I used many times under R5F27 and prior, with no problems of note. Both times I've used MythArchive since, the process has worked perfectly, according to the log files. The video is nice and pretty, but the audio is just static. If I turn up the volume to painful levels, I can make out some of the original audio, but it's not in any way usable. The input files have been MPG, 720x480, from Hauppauge 150 cards. It was set to use the cutlist, and it did run through all the steps I'm accustomed to seeing for that. My settings are set to always use MythTranscode, and to use FIFO files. The most recent file, which is the only one I've got at hand, was 2hrs 9min long after removing the commercials. The DVD claims to be 4:18 in length, although the video doesn't play past 2:09. Anyone have a clue on what I can do to re-enable this very useful functionality? Dragging files to my Windows box to clip commercials and convert to DVD is incredibly tedious. I have exactly the same issue. I've did an archive last night, and the audio is just noise. I've also tried to extract the audio from radio programs I've recorded, and all the audio ends up with white noise from one channel and you can hear a bit of the recording in the other, but all at half speed. As the myth2mp3 just uses ffmpeg, I think it's an issue to do with that?? Like you, this worked before I upgraded to 5.5 Anyone have any suggestions?! |

I think recompiling a new version of ffmpeg may solve the issues: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18547 |

Ok, so I just tried to burn my first DVD on R5.5 It was two 42 Minute recordings and 1 - 3 hr football game for a friend. On LP recording that would be about 5 hrs of playback on the DVD which I have fit easily in R5F27. First the process took, around 30hrs to run, That may be related to the discussion in post here : http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18547 When I went to play this DVD back the first splash for Myth TV played fine, but as soon as I selected any of the recordings the Audio was like the Roar of a Jet engine exhaust. Just random Noise. It appears I may have to redo ffmpeg from the above discussion and the referenced post. What is the easiest to accomplish this? Performing a system backup first. I know. But then any insight from there? TIA |

There was some talk about the same static problem with mythweb flash player. I followed the directions here and the static is gone. Haven't tried MythArchive so can't tell you if that works. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18507&start=21 |

Post subject: | same noise issue on DVDs made with R5.5 |
I've had the same noise issues with DVDs made with R5.5. Prior to R5.5, I've always had success making DVDs from standard definition shows. There aren't any reports of a successful fix in this thread. Has someone found one? Is the update of ffmpeg the fix? Eric |

Post subject: | it worked |
I guess I'll answer my own question. Yes, updating works. In the end, I updated, ffmpeg, mplayer, transcode from the recipies in the following posts: http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18706 http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4706 http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18507 All that fixed the static problem in the dvd creation process. 6-24-09 edit: This worked for a case of an over-the-air show from a digital tv station - using the HD-3000 card. The program already had an AC3 audio sound track. Eric |

Post subject: | works in some cases |
I just found a case where the ffmpeg update still isn't working during the DVD creation process - trying to convert the mp2 audio from a Hauppauge PVR card recording to AC3 audio for the dvd burn process. The Mythburn.log file shows how it bombs out with an error: Quote: Audio track 1 is in mp2 format - re-encoding to ac3

Post subject: | theory - mpg errors caused by lossless transcoding |
I have a theory. The Hauppauge PVR recordings I tried to make dvds of, were edited using the Mythtv lossless transcode editing. I trimmed off the beginning and end of the show. I just tried to burn those same edited files to a dvd over on a Windows machine and there were problems - GOP errors in the mpg file and the video/audio would run at half speed inside DVD authoring software (Ulead DVD Movie Factory). In order to get the video to play at the correct speed, I trimmed a few video frames off the start of the program and resaved the mpg file. That did it. I was able to make a dvd where the video/audio ran at the correct speed. So, my bet is that if I do not use Mythtv's lossless transcode editing on files recorded with the Hauppauge PVR cards, I will have no trouble using Mytharchive to make DVDs. I'll test this theory and report back. |

I almost never have problems with it, and it usually indicates a recordings with some kind of subtle problem. Occasionally it will produce a DVD where the audio drops out after one of the cuts, but that's very rare. My recommendations for using it:
- Don't go overboard on the bit rate, 6000 avg. 8000 max is what I tend to use for my high quality setting, and for long recordings you might want to drop it a hair (say 5500 & 7000, or even 5000 & 7000) - Try to mark your cut points on keyframe boundaries, and always clip the start and end of the stream. - I use the lossless transcoder on all my recordings ahead of time, and almost never let MythArchive transcode stuff. This seems to produce the most reliable results. - Try to minimize other activity on the system when MythArchive is running. I strongly suspect that something about the way it splits and the audio and video streams is timing sensitive. |

Post subject: | key frame edits - important! |
I just found out that the key is to make sure your start-of-program edit is a keyframe edit. That is all I had to do to my recordings that bombed out previously, and MythArchive could make a successful dvd out of them. The rest of my edits were just regular single frame edits (delete before this frame or delete after this frame). tjc, your checklist lines up with the way I have always set my PVR recordings and Mytharchive projects. So, I'm good, with nothing else to modify! Sweet! Thanks for the input. Eric |

I recall some problems like this that were solved by always cutting at least a small amount off the front of the recording by editing with mythfrontend while watching it. Edit, import commercial list to cutlist, make sure a little is cut off the front, MythArchive using cutlist. FYI, I am running an updated ffmpeg too. |

Thanks for this thread! I was trying to use transcode to help get it through. Removing a little in the beginning cured it and I don't have to wait for the tedious transcode! I'm still using the stock R5.5 ffmpeg. /Chris |
