I'll jump in here and say....

ATSC to MPEG2....OR ATSC to DVD-VOB.

Why? It's a standard, and it won't be changing anytime soon, if ever.

I spent most of my time tanscoding OTA broadcasts to the lower formats. I get about 3GB out of an 8-6GB program.

Just to get further clarity, do you mean converting ATSC to MPEG-2 Program Stream? ATSC broadcasts are already in MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) format. You shouldn't need to convert them if you want MPEG-2 output, unless you need program stream specifically.

Sorry...been away for a while.

MPEG2. NOT MPEG-TS.

Yes, I'm down-ing the resoultuion to 720p.

I'm not in the mood for xvid or divx. They are standards, but NOT on all standalone DVD players.

Just a quick/clean transcode to a DVD format that I can play on a standard DVD player, and burn an hour long 1080i ATSC broadcast on a SL DVD. Dual Layer media just isn't in my price range...yet, and I don't want to make expensive coasters!

I'm thinking about Blue Ray, but I do wish that HD-DVD would have survived. :(

It's old fashioned, but it should be archival quality, and playable anywhere.

Is it possible to add via software a way to "podcast" recorded programs. I.E. I have an iPad and I currently sync it with my PC, would if be possible to "podcast" a program?

I like to record show "A", but I don't always get the opportunity to watch it on the TV. A suggestion would be that your device in some form or another allow the record program be "podcast" so when I next plug in my iPad, program "A" will automatically be downloaded to my iPad.

Now I am using the term "podcast" very loosely here, in reality it can be any software or implementation, just to make it easy to copy the lastest recording to a mobile device, whatever it may be.
