Nuv2disc 0.13.7 has been posted.
Some of the changes include
- Removed the hard exit for the screen size check
- added failover from mplex to replex for dvb users
This should add working support out of the box
for Australian and possibly other folks as well.
(please not that replex needs to be installed)
- changed the default recording device to be /dev/dvd

The update can be downloaded from here
http://extras.mythtvtalk.com/downloads/ ... 3.7.tar.gz

or if your using a later version of knoppmyth run

nuv2disc-install.sh -download
and nuv2disc will backup commanvars and update itself.

-jams

PS
Greg Frost has been working on some other ideas and I expect to have them added fairly shortly.

Nuv2disc 0.14.1 is now on the website.
http://extras.mythtvtalk.com

This release adds the work of Greg Frost to allow the selection of non-mythtv recordings.
By default it's set for /myth/video which is the knoppmyth standard. If you need to change the location edit commonvars to fit your system

Please note that by default nuv2disc will only show mythtv recordings. For non-myth recordings to show up select "update file list" and then "update video"

Hi Jams -- I presume nuv2disc still does not handle HDTV shows? I'd like to transcode and save my HD recordings to DVD. It's a bigger problem, tho, because the resolution must be changed from 1920x1080i or 1280x720p down to 720x480 to put on a DVD. Also, the HDTV recordings are MPEG2-TS (transport stream) instead of MPEG2-PS (program stream).

It would take a seriously long time to do that transcoding. I have a friend that uses the same DVB card as me, but uses Windows software. He has a HDTV, so there is some benefit in him recording HD. But if he wants to archive content to DVD it takes about 4 hours to transcode 1 hour of HDTV recording. In Australia, the free to air channels tend to have High Def and standard def channels on the same multiplex. Usually the High def channel is just playing a high def demo. Other times it has a high def version of what is being running on the standard def channel. My friend has taken to just recording stuff from the standard def channel if he is possibly going to need to burn it to DVD.

Sometimes US stations simulcast in HD and SD. Even that isn't an ideal situation, however, because the SD version is 4:3 aspect ratio instead of 16:9. I'd really like a 16:9 anamorphic DVD out of my HD stream. Four hours? No sweat. I'm patient. I just hate to tie up my 'doze box that long to make a DVD (which is what I'm doing now).

Another thing to note is that he said the quality of his high def transcoded to SD resolution was worse than the SD simulcast. I guess this depends on the quality of the mpeg2 encoder.

I would think that the holy grail was:
HD -> BluRay (no transcoding)

Forget Blu-Ray right now. It will be so hopelessly mired in DRM it will NEVER be useful to Linux or open-source developers at all. I will NOT buy a HD-DVD player that forces me to live by Hollywood's rules. I will not be forced down that road.

No, all I want is to make a plain, old anamorphic DVD out of a HD show. That would fit my needs perfectly, as I want to be able to take a program over and show a friend or family. I'm disappointed that Linux tools are so far behind the times they can't even handle the Transport Stream format of the ATSC signals. I mean, come ON! This is the format used by all terrestrial and DVB broadcasts, and nobody even has a transcoder that can handle it!

Even windoze tools do a p1ss-poor job. I transcoded a 1.5 hour program THREE TIMES with Nero and it couldn't get it right ONCE. In one case, it dropped the Dolby Digital signal affter the first segment of the program. Next time, I left the commercials in and made it ONE segment -- the sound lagged the picture by about 30 seconds by the end of the film! About seventeen hours of computer time wasted along with three coasters.

I gave up.

C'mon Liv2Cod, do you live to code or code to live?

Cant be that hard to fix up transcode so it works (I wasn't aware it doesnt). I should try recording some High Def and seeing if I can transcode it.

EDIT: Well, I couldn't get my system to even record a HD channel without producing a corrupt stream. The CPU load didn't seem to be too high while it was recording, but I cant even play it back one frame at a time (in edit mode) without seeing horrible corruption artifacts. I guess my system (XP1700, 256M memory) is not up to it.

maybe you should think about recording your shows as ps instead of ts. I found I got better results that way anyways.

Recording as ps is about to be deprecated. People have had too much trouble with it and the devs are pulling it out of the next release.

Greg -- corrupt packets are part of life when recording HD. While I don't have a "high" number of bad packets, most Linux software is intolerant of ANY bad packets. It's but one of the problems that prevent any solution of recording HD->DVD.

Live to Whine ;-)

why are they pulling ps out, it was the only way to get mostly watchable hdtv out of my card. That sucks. They need to put a ton of work into TS if they are removing ps.

That does suck.... Using PS is the only way I can watch ABC with it poop'n the bed. Nothing like desperate wives in HD! ;)

also the mythtv player does not like TS very much, that's what I get over firewire, and rewind ff during livetv is all kinds of f@$%d up.
