Hi all:

Very often, when I change channels watching live TV, the video freezes,
and the frontend hangs. I have to force close X and restart it to continue
watching again.

A little while ago, I searched the MythTV user mailing list (and the forum
here) to check for what might be causing my Mythfrontend to hang when
changing channels.

I found a post on the mailing list, but my bookmark got corrupted, and
now I can't find that post. I did find this:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/99944?search_string=change%20channel%20crash;#99944

but I don't know if it's related to my problem at all.

Has anyone else here had this problem? Does anyone know what can cause crashing after channel changes? Has this been fixed in R5A16?

Thanks

shplad

I do remember encountering something like this, and R5A16 is much better because it's just a vague memory. ;-)

However, while I was messing about with HDTV last time using R5A16, I still saw this when the tuner couldn't get a good signal lock or produced a corrupted MPEG stream. At some point the front end either just gives up in disgust and goes back to the menu or if not it falls over and kicks you all the way out of the frontend...

also if using hdtv myth has a hell of a time if you switch to a channel with a different resolution, say from a 720p channel to a 1080i channel.

Xsecrets, how do you tell which format a channel is broadcasting in? 1080i, 720p or whatever?

good question I never really worried to much about it as I don't use livetv very often, but I think the backend log will tell you if you run it with the verbose switch, or I know you can find out by recording and playing the recording back with mplayer. I believe there is some more discussion about this somewhere on the forums.

If you run the frontend from an xterm, when you switch channels, it will tell you. I think the only channel that broadcast in 720p is ABC.

Thanks guys. I'm using analogue cards, though. Will R5A16 be likely to fix
those bugs for me too, or should I look somewhere else?

Cesman, I know you don't give away dates of new releases, but if you
were me and you did decide to upgrade, would you wait for the next
version, or go with R5A16?

Finally, is there some way to tell ivtv to load the driver on a different IRQ?
No matter in which slot I put my tuner, it always uses IRQ7.

Thanks again

If I were you, I wouldn't know the date... So, I'd update to R5A16. Updating between releases is pretty safe and I think a non issue at this point.
