Post subject:  Sound Settings

I am having a problem with my sound, when I watch live tv it echo's ... I have followed the steps here (http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-7.html#ss7.2) and when I do that then audio does NOT get recorded. Anyone know what I need to do to get this right? ...btw I am running Gentoo.

1) You have not provided enough detail so I'm guessing. Please provide the hardware details so we have a fighting chance of giving you the right answer.

2) You've most likley hooked things up wrong both physically and in software. Make sure that the loopback jumper from your bttv type (guessing) TV capture card is plugged into "line in" (which is what I believe those directions assume) rather than the microphone, then mute (disable pass through for) that. You may need to mute some other inputs as well. BTW - setting the volume to zero is not the same as muting. The only things that should be unmuted are PCM, Master and External. When you run alsamixer it's important to realize that there are more controls than will fit on the screen so you will have to scroll right and left with the arrow keys.

Hardware wise everything is setup correctly. I was using this exact same setup in windows. I am pretty sure it has to do with the alsamixer settings. Can you maybe give me step by stop how to set the correct settings? Here are system specs btw.

AMD XP 2000+
ATI Tv Wonder Pro
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro
Onboard VIA Sound.

No, I can't. Not because I don't want to, but because the options presented depend on the hardware used. However this really isn't rocket science. Get a terminal/shell session (many ways to do this which are beyond the scope of a simple posting - try Ctrl-Alt-F2 and logging in as root.) Run the command alsamixer. Hit '?' to see the keybinding help screen. Experiment to make the settings match those suggested.
