Post subject:  Decreasing Boot Time

Does anyone have any recommendations for decreasing the boot time? Right now, my box (P4-1700 MHz) is taking 3+ minutes to load.

Is it possible to recompile the kernel, and turn off some of the modules I don't use so that the computer doesn't waste time probing for them?

It's all modules, and it generally doesn't load what it doesn't need. Most of the time is spent probing hardware and that's a lot harder to trim.

True.

But suppose, for example, I disabled USB (and serial, and parallel support) in the kernel. Wouldn't the boot be faster if we told the kernel not to probe at all for it?

I think this has been covered a long time ago. Basically, the fastest boot time you will get is from building a monolithic kernel with all the modules that you use built in. This way there is very little (or no) probing and your box will get on with its business.
