Hi there,

I am new to linux and new to Knoppmyth.

I have set it up and I am getting play DVD playback which is really choppy......

I believe I have set the DMA of the optical drive ok, but again Im new I may have done it wrong.

I have installed the "examples" needed and the dvds play, but just slow?

My system:

P4 2GHz
DVD Drive
512MB RAM

How can I fix this?

Thanks.....

to check dma run as root

hdparm /dev/hda

(this assumes a pata drive on primary master)

output should look something like this, obviously the dma line is most important, the 32bit io helps too.

/dev/hda:
multcount = 0 (off)
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 16383/255/63, sectors = 156301488, start = 0

Hi there,

Its playing from the DVD drive so that would be hdc (Secondary Master) and that does have DMA Enabled, although it doesnt have 32bit IO enabled.

I do get an error when I do that, whcih I will post in a minute

Should I enable 32bit IO in the bios then?

Does that help?

Thanks...

well it lets you know that at least you are using dma. if you want to enable 32bit io and see if it helps the command would be. as root

hdparm -c 1 /dev/hdc

Hi there,

I am new to linux and you dont get these kinds of commands in windows so I have already reset and changed in linux i will post what happens.

I also get an error when running the hdparm /dev/hdc command, something to do with multicount or something like that. I will post it in a minute.

Do you have msn messenger? Would you be willing to jump on and help me through there? If so my msn address is: ruudbarron [at] hotmail [dot] com

Thanks...

Hi there,

Right its still not working and this is what I get when I run the command: "hdparm /dev/hdc"

I get this:

Quote:
HDIO_GET_MULTCOUNT failed: Invalid Argument
IO_Support = 1
unmaskirq = 0
using_dma = 1
keepsettings = 0
readonly = 0
readahead = 256
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Invalid Argument

What do i do next?

Thanks...

You should not have to install any drivers for you drive to work. Does anything else playback choppy? What video card do you have? Does it support Xv?
