Post subject:  Just a Few More Questions...

Okay, my Asus P4P800 doesn't seem to be working too well, and I have an
Abit NF7 just sitting in the box, but the only processor I have for it is a Sempron 2400+, & 512MB mem for the board; 'sound okay ?
Well, I bought a Nvidia [PNY] video card with the S-Video out, and when I went to install it, I found I had almost an identical card [although mine has a fan on it]; so, if I'm going to return that video card & purchase a new one, which video card seems to be the consensus "best" ?
Also, on installation, and reboot, I get an "error creating / .qt"; not sure what
the cause of this is.
I realize I can search for this, but does the PRV-350 & 500 seem to work well
together ? I'd like to be able to record 2 programs while watching something else.
Okay, stupid question, but if I failed to get a remote with the PVR-500 I have right now, what do I do when the install asks about remotes ?
I'm using SmoothWall for my PC; will this work okay for MythTV ?
Thanks, I'll get the hang of it eventually !!

Sure.

Hands down the best composite/s-vdeo tv-output is from the hauppauge pvr-350. Next would be any nvidiacard they all seem to have about the same quality.

Not sure.

That is my exact setup. Works great.

The pvr-500 doesn't come with a remote. The last choice in the remote menu is "exit". Use that if you don't have a remote.

What is smoothwall?

When you even admit that you haven't done the searching that you should have, you are lucky that anyone took pity on you and responded.

Hi,

There should have been a remote with the 350 and if so you only need the one remote. I use a 350 card also and use the #16 Haupauge & the I think it was the d remote choice. Ya, I know that is suppose to be for the 150 but it works and seems to work with either hand control, ie the "gray" & the "doggie bone" that comes with the 150 nonmce. You can always change it.

If you plan to do tv out of the 350, then you don't need super go faster video card.

The system is extremely flexible, and worse case just do a backup and the an auto upgrade to try again. After the first ten or twenty one gets the hang of it. :)

Have a great day!
Mike

Post subject:  Thanks

Thanks for the responses. I have done quite a few searches, but it's a lot of info to wade through, but noted.
SmoothWall Express is a linux firewall on a dedicated machine which is usually made from an older PC that one might have laying around. Excellent firewall [www.smoothwall.org].
Again thanks; I realize some of these questions are stupid & redundant; it's just a whole new experience for me. I went through much the same thing with Smoothwall & adding "homebrew" mods, but at least I know where all the configuration files are for Smoothwall.
Did anyone, or has anyone, ever considered just listing the main configuration files as a sticky, or possibly they're in the docs ? I was having trouble with the program guide & had my user name & password entered, but forgot to change localhost the the correct IP. I can work with vi, but I'd sure consider installing midnight commmander [I think that can be done; it can with Smoothwall, which is a limited, dedicated distro].
BTW, I haven't looked it up, but would assume that the NF7 is very similar to the Abit board mentioned in the hardware description of MB's ? And, with 2 cards, I'm assuming again that as far as memory goes, I should probably get another 512MB to go with that I already have for a total of 1GB.
Thanks again.

Hi mal1ch1,

Ease up a bit :) I have a box running 400mhz 256 mem 40 gig pvr 350, works fine. If you go into HD then then maybe big memory is needed although mine worked with 1.5 ghz & 384meg...

Smoothwall is a great firewall, have had several running for years. KnoppMyth doesn't care, if you give it an ip, a gw and a name server to find things, you should be golden.

Install KM and if you problems, give the folks here some details. They will have you flying in no time.

Thanks Mike, I think I'm starting to get the hang of some of it; like anything, it's mostly a matter of reading a lot, working with the project or whatever, and just hanging in there. Having an exceptional forum like this one is a real bonus & additional source of info.
