I have a machine with a sata western digital 500gb drive on a via 8237 chipset and knoppmyth does not recognize the drive. Is there a way of inserting the correct mod or should i "try" a newer kernel, or some other trick I have not found yet?

You're not providing a lot of detail to go on.

- Check what the BIOS sees the drive as. If the BIOS doesn't see it then KM doesn't have a chance.

- Do you have a PATA device (say an optical drive) that's showing up as /dev/hda and fooling the installer?

- What type of drive? How is it jumpered? ...

- What motherboard? Have you checked your BIOS settings? ...

The answers you get are only as good as the question you ask.

Two things to check though...

Your BIOS should have a SATA mode setting. "Native" vs. "Legacy" although
wording varies. The Legacy mode is more compatible in my experience.
When installing Windows on a Dell box at work, I found that I either needed
the driver floppy, or I needed to set this mode to "Legacy".

You might try downloading a recent Knoppix CD/DVD and seeing whether
it has a hard time with it in Native mode too.
