I have installed Mythtv and it seems to boot ok until it gets to the gdm. Once here and it tries to start x it blacks out and give a signal frequency is out of range. FH 312kHz FV 249Hz. I never set anything for this and have no idea how or where to change this. I have an ATI Radeon AIW 7500 video. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

knowing what you are trying to output to over what kind of connection would be a great help.

This is right after the initial setup of KnoppMyth. After the install I rebooted the computer to bring up the newly installed knoppmyth and when gdm starts (which I am assuming that this is the start of the gui) I get this message and have no gui. I can ctrl-alt-f1 to the command line, but I can not startx.

That is odd, usually monitors work fine with the default settings. If you can find your monitors vertical and horzontal refresh rates then you can plug them into the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.

Well I would think that a monitor would usually work with default refresh rates, but not the default ones seem to be set in mine. They are as follows being reported from a blip on my monitor when it says that it is out of range FH 312kHz FV 249Hz.

well maybe you should try following the instructions in the second part of my post.

oh and by the way a quick search would find "avoid ati like the plague" numerous times.

Blaster (and all the newbies) - when one of the old hands around here asks for details to diagnose a problem they mean LOTS of details. Software versions, hardware models and versions, ... Making them drag the details out of you piecemeal is like going to the doctor and saying "my head hurts" repeatedly and refusing to provide more details. Actually it's worse because at least the doctor can look at you and check for other physical manifestations.

Try a little enlightened self interest here. 1) It's not a waste of your time to provide possibly unneeded details if it gets yout the right answer the first time instead of having to go back and forth a dozen times or so. 2) Our time is just as valuable as yours, and most of the folks who are clueful enough to help, are also clueful enough to spot people wasting their time and start ignoring them.

Help us, help you.

Thanks.

To Xsecrets,

Not to sounds rude or mean, but I am so sorry that i could not afford to go out and buy a new video card to do the job. I am using an ati card\computer system because this is what I had.

I also was just letting you know that it was odd on how high the numbers were. I have just never seen the numbers this high for these settings. I never said that I had or had not tried your solution. I can not tryi it until I get home for the day...

Again sorry for the lack of information. I am usually better than that. I am a Network Specialist and have only a little experience with Linux. I am getting better as I get to work with it. I know that more information is almost always a better thing.

Sean

I understand we have to work with what we have sometimes, I was just letting you know you may have some problems with ATI and there's not much anyone can do to help as ATI will not release the docs to let open source programmers write proper drivers.

I agree those numbers are extremely high, and I assure you that is not the default setting. Xfree operates a little differently than windows you don't directly set the refresh rates you set the range your monitor supports, and it picks the best one. Also the reason I said it was odd is that the settings in the default config will not allow refresh rates that high, unless your video card or monitor are reporting something that tells it to use that high. I have a hard time believing those numbers as I have never seen anything go that high.
