For what it's worth, I had a frustrating issue with sound. My pc has a built in headphone output. I finally figured out that I had to turn on the headphone output in alsamixer and plug my speakers into the headphone jack.

jac1d, dmesg | grep tuner says that I have a type = 50.

Girkens, thanks for the link to saving alsa config sadly I didn't have any luck with those solutions. My only card to show up through the cat /proc/asound/cards is the nForce2 and the solutions related to update-rc.d alsa were also a complete bust.

iscraigh, I will be curious to see if the new motherboard works out.

I am still at a complete loss. I keep thinking a fresh install will save everything, but I just can't get this thing to work.

I hope by bumping this back to the top that one of the many uber-mythheads will know the solution and keep me from crying into my pillow at night.

When you do a dmesg | grep ivitv

Is ivtv using tuner type 50? Which version of KnoppMyth are you running? If you have a tuner mismatch, ie the one that is set manually (if your rev requires setting it manually) and the one the system detects are close but not the same, you could get an oddity like picture but no audio. Or picture but no colour.

I dmesg | grep ivitv yesterday and got the tuner type 50. I didn't set anything maually this is the way that it happened out of the autoinstall (I am not literate enough to even attempt a manual installation). I hope it's not the board. I am worried. I will keep playing with it.

I found a solution for my same problem, same board.

From Root run; alsamixer
use the arrow keys to go to the left for the IEC958 settings
this must be muted; press M
Sound sound now work

Forgot to mention;
esc to exit alsamixer
then; alsactl store
to save the settings.

So I fixed it or did I???

I tried bmc's fix to no avail. I reinstalled the creative audio card, chose it through alsaconf, alsamixer to make sure it looked good, alsactl store and rebooted.

No Sound

I switched the wires to the chaintech audio out and WTF??? it worked. So I chose the other card and now the one I didn't select is the one I am using. Does anyone understand how this worked?? It's magic. There is no other explanation. MAGIC.

Now I need to get the remote working. I tried:

nano /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh and adding:

modprobe lirc_i2c
/usr/local/sbin/lircd

at the very end. I am going to do some research into this problem before I start another thread with my ongoing Linux/MythTV/Knoppmyth illeteracy.

I have to again thank you all for the ongoing support and advice. The community here at mysettopbox.tv has been so helpful. I am sure that my fix will not help anyone else, but you never know.

Hi I have the exact same problem - I have a chaintech 7nif2 mobo. this is what I can tell so far. That master is the master switch for sound but not a master volume.

asound.state is missing the controll for master volume. Same with PCM is just a toggle not the actual volume. I tried copying a asound.state file from another post

see http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=25277&

this asound.state has the master volume. Copied the state file on to my machine and used alsactl restore but that didn't work still when I go into alsamixer there is no volume controll for the master and pcm. UGH!

I'm having the same problem as previously mentioned. No sound. in the alsa mixer, master & pcm can toggle between "00" and "mm" but can't increase volume. Alsa mixer shows acurately that I'm using nforce2 with c-media sound.

Mobo: 7NIF2
TV Card: pvr250
combined fe/be

Anybody had any luck on this? I was running r5a12 with no probs. r5a16--everything goes to heck.

I am using 15.1 and had this problem
doing this solved it
From Root run; alsamixer
use the arrow keys to go to the left for the IEC958C settings
this must be muted; press M
Sound sound now work

exit alsa mixer and run alsa save (Not the right command I will look for the correct one.)

Mine lost the setting on reboot so I had to do this

Cecil changed window managers to fluxbox. Either add a line that looks like this (notice that I stripped the exec, you don't want it here) to the beginning of /home/mythtv/.fluxbox/apps before the line that does KnoppMyth-run
Code:
[startup] {/usr/sbin/alsactl restore}

Now it works fine. Let me know if this fixes it because I may upgrade soon.

Okay I'll give that a try. thanks

Unfortunately I had to revert back to r5a12 for tonight. I was able to revert back in an amazing 20min! [For the record backing up the entire /etc independtly of the backup function helps immensely. then just drop the backed up etc over top the newly installed one and 90%of you settins are restored. also backup themes and channel changing script. this is only works when restoring the same version]

I am using r5V16 and had this problem
doing this:
From Root run; alsamixer
use the arrow keys to go to the left for the IEC958C settings
this must be muted; press M

did not make my sound work.

I did the following:

alsactl store

but it was lost on reboot as stated above.

I then added the line to the beginning of /home/mythtv/.fluxbox/apps before the line that does KnoppMyth-run
Code:
[startup] {/usr/sbin/alsactl restore}

That worked--kind of. The sound then played, but it played all the time. When in the main menu, the sound continued to play from the last channel I exited out of. When watching TV, the sound was two second behind or so.

I then went into into the configuration (done by typing: alsamixer -V all) to change the settings so that I was capturing correctly and muting where needed (could also be edited using code only by typing the following:
amixer set Master,0 100%,100% unmute
amixer set PCM,0 100%,100% unmute
amixer set Line,0 75%,75% mute captur
amixer set Capture,0 100%,100% captur
su
alsactl store), I saw that the sound was defaulted back to the mother board's sound--not the SOUND BLASTER LIVE!

So sound was going through my sound blaster live because I could HEAR sound and my speakers are plugged into it (must have been from the command line I added in before the KnoppMyth run as stated above).

So I ran the command: alsaconf again to choose the SOUND BLASTER LIVE! card for my sound, and then went to configure the sound so that the sound would not be 2 second off (muting where needed, capturing where needed, etc.). I made the adjustments by doing the command: alsaconfig -V all again and made the appropriate changes. System needed to be rebooted before changes would take affect. I rebooted, and the motherboard's sound is defaulted again--> and now there is NO sound. Not even delayed sound. No sound in menu, no sound while watching TV.

MY question is, where you can tell KnoppMyth which default sound hardware will be used??? during installation, you can choose which networking hardware to use (if you have integrated and a seperate LAN card), but where can you specify which sound hardware to use? It currently defaults to use my motherboard first. If disabled in the CMOS, the default sound hardware that will be used my KnoppMyth is the TV Tuner (Happauge). The last default for sound hardware will be the ONE THAT I WANT--> the SOUND BLASTER LIVE!

Someone PLEASE ADVISE!

Thanks

this follows the above post (also done by myself--but I accidently inactivated my account so I had to create a new one)...

I re did all of the steps above, and now it's working again in the main menu!, but when I go to watch TV, it says, "Error opening audio device (/dev/dsp), the error was: No such device" and I can either "Continue WITHOUT AUDIO" or "Return to MENU". Last time, I choose to continue without audio and it was 2 seconds behind or so. If I return to menu I obviously go back to the menu. Last time I continued without audio and I'm guessing that's why it was set back to my MOTHERBOARD (maybe it WANST that extra code I added in above KnoppMyth run in the file listed above). I'm guessing that if I continue without sound, I'm screwed, but if i go back to the menu, then what's the point of watching TV if all I'm really doing is LISTENING to TV and WATCHING my menu! lol. someone please heeeeeeeeelllp!!!!!!!!!

any ideas?

I'd like to nudge the experts on this topic. I am in the same spot as those above. I have tried alsamixer, muting and unmuting things, and found no improvement. What I have now is working analog sound from a Chaintech 710 *outside* of Myth. I can run mplayer on mp3s and a test mpg (created with cat /dev/video0) and get beautiful, clear sound. I fire up Myth and I get nothing on live tv.

I have seen Girkers post that the default install uses digital out, just change it! Well, the documentation is a little sparse on sound settings. Under general settings, my sound is set to /dev/dsp. I have tried cycling through /dev/dsp0-2 and /dev/adsp0-2, tried typing ALSA:default, ALSA:Analog, ALSA:analog. Nothing. Anything other than /dev/dsp gives me an error when opening live tv. The mixer is /dev/mixer. Can anyone suggest other settings to try under General settings?

For the record, I have a Chaintech 7NIF4, PVR250 980, Chaintech 710 soundcard (using analog out), R5V16.

I have recompiled IVTV and followed other suggestions about where to copy the *.o files. I have updated modules, I have rebooted, I have run alsamixer and alsaconf (trying various fixes people seem to think work), I have alsactl stored my settings. Nothing.

Since I get sound outside Myth, I feel like this is an issue with getting the settings correct. Any suggestions?
