you may want to use df -h /cache that will give you human redable sizes instead of blocks. Well you may want to do that if you are lazy like me and don't feel like calculating anything.

I get the following output from df - /cache:

Code:
Filesystem           Size      Used  Available  Use%  Mounted on
/dev/hda3           4.1G      66M   4.0G            2%  /cache

- looks like there's plenty of space.

Under my 'host-specific backend setup' I've got Live TV buffer set to 4GB and Minimum free Live TV buffer set to 50MB.

These all sound ok to me. What do you guys think?

well you've got a 4.1 Gb partition so that leaves presumably 100Mb of buffer zone between your setting and what's there. now it says 66Mb is used on who knows what that's getting really close I would lower it down some more. I like to have a bit of safty zone. I would make it like 3.5 or 3.6 Gb to be safe, particularly if I was having problems with livetv after a few hours.

Thanks I'll give that a try and let you know how I get on. Live TV was freezing after a matter of seconds though rather than hours.

if it's a matter of seconds then that is not your problem.

You're right. I knocked the cache size down to 3 GB (the setup only allows multiples of 1GB) and it ddn't solve the problem. Live TV hung after about 25 seconds. I have found that I can quit MythTV and get it to restart by using Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, so it's not a complete system hang like I originally thought.

Any ideas what I can try next? Your help is much appreciated.

Start the frontend from an Xterm, try to watch live TV then quit. <ALT><Tab> to get the xterm in the front. <Ctrl><C> to quit. What does it state?

or if that doesn't work have a look at /home/mythtv/.xsession-errors might have some info in it.

Hmm, when it hangs alt-tab and ctrl-C both have no effect. Ctrl+alt+backspace doesn't work now either, although I'm sure that worked before.

/home/mythtv/.xsession-errors only contains some startup logging at the moment - does this get emptied every boot? I can't check it after live tv has hung as I can't exit MythTV and need to reboot. If it is the case that /home/mythtv/.xsession-errors is purged on every boot is there a way I can prevent that happening so I can see if there's anything logged when it hangs after I've had to give it a reboot?

If this is any help - if I start MythTV from and XTerm window, then go to Live TV and allow it to start, then quit Live TV before it hangs, I have the following output in the Xterm window (can't work out how to scroll up, PgUp / PgDn doesn't seem to work in Xterm)

I still can't figure out a way to get back to the XTerm window once Myth TV has crashed when I watch Live TV. Can anybody help?

Thanks.

I've done a complete reinstall, and the only things I've changed are setting up my network card, installing the epia specific debs as detailed here:

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3775

and setting up the tuner and channels using mythtv-setup... I'm still getting the same problem. Can anyone help me with tracking down the cause of the hang?

Thanks.

In case anyone ever comes across this thread I tracked the problem down to be a problem with the Via EPIA chipset. There's a documented DMA bug which causes the hanging. More info can be found here:

Hi miraclemaker,

Just for hesterical resons, what do you have for hardware and what version of KnoppMyth? That way maybe someday someone can / will make a list of what works and what doesn't work in various combinations.

Thanks
Mike

The main cause of the problem id my motherboard: a via Epia MII 12000, although the majority of Via boards that use the VT8235 northbridge suffer from the problem. I've been using Knoppmyth from version R5A15. That said, it is possible to get round this issue by playing with various options, if you search this forum you can find them. Also, via have released a beta bios which supposedly fixes the problem, but it has had mixed reports of success (mostly negative).
