Okay, I liked the live-tv and recording viewing capabilities of the PVR-350, but the video play (avi, mpgeg, etc) was no good.
So, I purchased an fx5200 and the opposite is true. Video play is good, but Live-TV viewing and Recording viewing sucks.

My current solution in my head: Use the PVR-350 for Live-TV and recording playback and the FX5200 for everything else. I know this can be done with something like an AB switch, but I'm wondering if there is a way I can do it without clicking buttons. Is there an auto-switch out there that perceives which video cable is sending a signal and which isn't? I tried just using a Y-splitter cable (so both outputs were always going to the input), but that made the screen go wacky.

Any thoughts? And yes, I already searched the forums. I saw a thread where tjc was exploring his options, but never saw a definitive answer.

FYI: my main problem with the fx5200 for viewing recordings is jittery screens and shadowing when there is quick movement.

What sort of de-interlacing are you doing for the FX5200 output? I suspect that this is the principal difference between the PVR-350's TV out and your fx5200. The PVR understands interlaced mpegs and displays the interlaced fields properly on it's S-Video output. Getting the FX-5200 to do this is a little more tricky.

You either need to use a screen resolution that has the same vertical resolution as your recordings and dont do any de-interlacing with mythtv, or you can use bob deinterlacing (in which case a mismatch in vertical resolution will soften the output slightly as a result of scaling that occurs, but the interlaced fields will still be presented to the TV correctly).

Okay. I think I understood what you're saying (to a certain degree).
How do I figure out what my recording's vertical resolution is, and then how do I set my screen resolution to the same? (I assume it's a setting in XF86Config-4)

I'll see what the bob deinterlacing looks like, I was using the default deinterlacing option.

What about the other video options that are on that setup page? I tried to find a set of optimal settings here or on the wiki, but was unable to.

It took me a while to get my head around the deinterlacing options too.

Perhaps this post will help (perhaps not).

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... svideo+bob

You can run
Code:
tcprobe -i /myth/tv/name.nuv
or perhaps
Code:
mplayer -identify /myth/tv/name.nuv
to see a recording's format.

If you are using the PVR-350 for your recordings, You probably have some degree of control over the resolution at which it records. You would be well advised to ensure that your recording vertical resolution matches your TV standard (576 lines for PAL, 480 lines for NTSC).

I thought the knoppmyth default deinterlacing was none.

I'm no expert on modelines (I only have a GeForce2 card which has limited functionality) but a search of the forum and the wiki using modeline is sure to bring up lots of information (much of which may be hard to digest).

My vertical resolution is 576, and bob as a deinterlace does make the image look much nicer, thanks for the suggestions.
I will continue to pursue modeline options...

When I said the default, I meant once you turn deinterlacing on the default deinterlacing mode.
