I have been having troubles getting my Wintv dbx working. It has the 878A chip like on the Wintv-go models. The screen is all green except for the very top which is fuzz.

There are many posts on changing the card numbers and tuner numbers which I have done as well as creating a bttv file.

I have done all these as well as changing it from US-Cable to US-Cable-HRC but the picture is always green. The numbers on the sticker is NTSC 61381 Rev D423.

Any ideas?

sounds like a conexant chipset to me search for cx8xx or something like that I know I've seen a few success stories about this one recently, though you would have to get the latest drivers if this is the case.

quick update.
I tried different card numbers and tuner numbers to the bttv file with no luck. I grabbed an old hard drive with Ubuntu on it, pulled out the hard drive with Mythtv, and the card worked immediately when Tvtime was installed. Are there any settings in Unbuntu that I can use to help me get the card to run in KnoppMyth?

Try using xawtv. It is the simplest method to check if your card is working. To get the card working in mythtv, the channel information in the database needs to be setup correctly. Look in dmesg (dmesg | grep bttv) to see if the card is being detected correctly. Do the same on your ubuntu so that you can see what card number it is using. Xawtv lets you select the frequency table (using a menu) and then change channels with the up and down keys. Once you have the /etc/mythtv/modules/bttv files with the correct card= option in it, and the card works under your mythtv install, then start looking at why it doesnt work in mythtv.

The screen was still black until I started playing with different commands. When I ran
xawtv -c /dev/video0 -remote the screen went all green with static at the top. This is exactly what my Mythtv is doing! In ubuntu using xawtv I went to the lower channels and I was watching tv. Then I disconnected the drive, connected the Mythtv drive, saw the green with static, went to the lower channels but still nothing.
The xawtv website states that the -c /dev/video0 command makes xawtv talk directly to the device and the -remote command makes xawtv operate in grabdisplay mode.
After doing all this I do not see what the correct card # is or where it is stored for the /bttv files in mythtv.

Dental problems advice

The dmesg bit was supposed to give you the card number not the xawtv. xawtv is just to check that the card is working once you have the right card number. What do you get from each system when you do

Cool. So I see its card 10 and tuner 2.
Do I add these lines to my bttv or bttv0 file?

I'm no expert on how this works but that seemed to do the trick for me.

Nope. Still the same thing. Oh well. I ordered a PVR-250 online today to replace the Wintv card. With the Mpeg 2 compression I can store shows on the hard drive soon. What are the chances of me plugging it in and having it work right away? It cant be any worse a time then the Wintv card.

Did the dmesg output indicate that your knoppmyth install had used the same card and tuner options as your ubuntu install? I fail to see why it should work in one and not in the other. Unless there a bug has crept into the kernel that means that the presumably newer kernel on your knoppmyth system is broken with that card.

Success! The install disk of KnoppMyth was on old re-writable that is a few years old so I burn a new one time only disk at a slow speed. After a drive format and reinstall it worked immediately! It was either a bad install or I tweaked something that I shouldn't have along the way. Mythtv rocks!
