When there is motion or panning, any straight edges that are perpendicular to the motion/panning will get wavy. ex: a car zooming down the country road looks fine, but the telephone poles get wavy. A picket fence in a horizontal pan looks like a white lattice.

Only on 1080i stations (NBC/PBS). No problem on ABC/FOX.

If I run the de-interlacer, Bob, etc., it'll go away. But then I sometimes get stuttering (goes away with skipback, sometimes 3-4 tries, but always eventually "syncs up") While troubleshooting the audio stutter, I started questioning the need for the De-Interlacing (turned on in settings | TV | Playback).

I've got a CRT RPTV, and as far as I know, it's interlaced.
Chaintech GeForce 6200 to SONY KP-WV700 via DVI
I've got some modelines that seem to be working well, but are "borrowed", and I didn't go through the PowerStrip utility to get them.

ex:
ModeLine "ATSC-1080-71.93p" 178.022 1920 1960 2016 2200 1080 1082 1088 1125
ModeLine "ATSC-1080-72p" 178.2 1920 1960 2016 2200 1080 1082 1088 1125
ModeLine "SONY1920x1080" 74.250 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1094 1124 interlace
+hsync +vsync
ModeLine "SONY-720x480" 27.000 720 736 798 858 480 489 495 525 -hsync -vsync

I'm thinking that I don't need the de-interlacing, and that this is merely covering up a problem with my modelines. But I thought I'd see if anyone can confirm that before I go to that trouble.

Also, is there a way to determine WHICH modeline is currently in effect? Troubleshooting seems tricky when I can't pin down the cause/effect. The system seems to skip over bad attempts and use something else, without letting me know what its doing.

Also, If I decide to try PowerStrip, can I use another PC, or does it have to be done on the Myth box? My desktop PC has DVI, and it's an nVidia 5200. Is that close enough, or do I need to install XP on the MythBox to do the test? I will if I have to, but won't if I don't...

Thanks for any tips/guidance.

all of your modelines are progressive so any interlaced video will have those interlacing artifacts unless you turn on deinterlace. If your tv can handle it you need a 1080i modeline, as it will play everything fine. On my set using 1080i I can play 480i/720p/1080i content all beautifully without turning on deinterlace.

Thanks Xsecrets, I was hoping you'd reply to this.

Isn't this line interlaced?

ModeLine "SONY1920x1080" 74.250 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1094 1124 interlace +hsync +vsync

Does "interlace" do it, or is it more to do with the timing?

yes it is sorry somehow I read right over that one.

in your screens section just make sure that all other modes are commented out but that one under your default color depth .

Code:
Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device     "Card0"
        Monitor    "Monitor0"
        DefaultColorDepth 24

SubSection "Display"
                Depth     24
#               Modes "ATSC-720-59.94p"
#               Modes "ATSC-720-60p"
#               Modes "1280x720"
#               Modes "960x540p"
#               Modes "ATSC-1080-59.94i" "ATSC-720-59.94p" "640x480"
#               Modes "ATSC-1080-60p"
#               Modes "ATSC-1080-60i"
#               Modes "1024x768@60"
                Modes "1024x768" "640x480"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

something like that, as you can see there I've currently gone back to standard modes. waiting on a new hdmi -> dvi cable.

Turns out I WAS using the Interlaced modeline all along:
Code:
ModeLine "SONY1920x1080" 74.250 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1094 1124 interlace +hsync +vsync

Sorry for my confusion on this. I did lots of playing, with various sample modelines. They all look pretty good, and the GUI always runs at 960x540, which is as I understand it, ok.
But the ripples on the 1080i recordings are present unless I run the de-interlacer. Weird.
Makes me think about installing another drive and doing a fresh install and seeing if it still does it, or if it's some setting that I've modified without knowing what it does.

I'm using the nVidia drivers that came in R5A26. Should I have gotten different ones? I'm wondering if it's a driver issue. Lots of talk about the new nVidia drivers, making me wonder if this is something that's fixed.
