Hello:

I know this has been asked a million times. I am smart but a Super noob kinda with linux. I thought i was pretty good with linux until this Lirc crap. Heres my situation.

Working with:
Old Athlon 1700+ 1.1 ghz (New intel 2.13 celeron D 533FSB on the way)

768 MB Ram sdram(New 2-256 mb ddr pc3200 on the way)

Asus Motherboard 266 FSB (new MSI-MicroAtx 533 FSB on the way)

Hauppauge 401 w/ Grey Remote (But who the hell knows. It looks grey and silver. Its the one with the 4 colored buttons around the 4 corners of the OK button in the center)

KnoppMyth R5A30.1

ATI Radeon 8500 Card (blech i know...NVidia geforce4-t64 is on the way)

Everything installs fine. When i use the keyboard i can navigate, record shows, programming menu...the whole shebang.

I fixed my sound issues which realistically I think KnoppMyth should do for you. (ie Master 100%, PCM 100%, Line 100% muted, capture and then "alsactl store" to make sure that these settings get saved upon reboot)

Now on to the REMOTE (AAAAAAHHHHH!!!) Everything would be so perfect if i could get this working.

Ok button works fine
Up is assigned to 8
Down is assigned to 2
Left is assigned to 4
Right is assigned to 6
and thats it....

I have read alot about this and still can't seem to get things working. I even changed my /etc/lircd.conf and /etc/lirc/lircd.conf to a newer config file which i found online but it didn't seem to do anything. Which config file is the one that lircd uses and why are there 2 of them?

When i check ps auwx there is no 'lircd'. When i type 'lircd' it gets running. Then i type 'irw' nothing happens...It looks like when i try to run 'irw' it closes the 'lircd' that i had running because when i type 'irw' again it says connect: connection refused. Then when i do 'ps auwx' again 'lircd' isnt there anymore.

I have reinstalled KnoppMyth about a million times trying different things and dig this....1 of the times all the number buttons worked and the OK button worked but none of the other ones. I didnt even do anything different. I know its not a connection problem because the IR reciever plugs nicely into the TVcard.

Do i need the new lirc 0.7.2. Can i use apt-get to get it? If so what is the command line? I know NOTHING about recompiling the kernel so please include even the most BASIC steps in your answers.

Thank you ALL in advance,

If you'd read the changelog, you'd see that R5A30.1 does include LIRC 0.7.2.

Hey sorry man. This is my first knoppmyth install so it was all new to me. Hence I never really read the changelog unless i am upgrading from something. Regardless of what the changelog says..the version that got installed on my machine is 0.7.1pre2
