I've got an old pc that has a PIII 600mhz cpu and 128mb of RDRAM (expensive to add more). This is all on a intel brand motherboard.

I'd like to use this as a backend ONLY (no playback) as I already have a modded xbox for playback. If I use a hardware encoder (PVR-150, PVR-250, etc) will this be enough to record with one capture card?

Also, can you recommend any cheaper PCI IDE Raid cards that can do raid 5 and work well with knoppmyth?

Thanks! :D

This should be mega overkill for a backend only if you are using a hardware encoding Hauppauge PVR-150/250/350/500 etc.

Most likely it would be enough for a BT878 framegrabber as well.

I'd bet it would even work for a HD-3000 HDTV.

I got a Pentium II 266 with 128MB PC100 SDRAM to record with a BT 878 card. It could also playback at 320x240 but it could NOT do both simultaneously.

Make sure HD DMA is enabled.

Raid 5 at the moment just doesn't work well with the knoppmyth install, as it shows up as scsi It might be possible to do a manual install, but trying to use a PCI RAID card is going to cause you some grief.

Thanks for the replies!

Also a completely seperate question. For ripping DVD's can you do that on the frontend and just push the file to the backend server, or do you need to insert the dvd into the server itself?

How do you think my setup would do with transcoding into divx?

Thanks!

Dont ask completely separate questions at the end of a thread. Start a new thread.
