Ok... So I had some problems before with KnoppMyth not detecting my ATi Tuner Card, and now I baught a Hauppauge PVR-150 MCE. This card is still not being detected. I searched the forums, and found a couple usefull posts. I folowed instructions on this post and found that I was missing some things.
When I ran 'lspci' I did not see any 'Multimedia Video Controler' listed. I don't really know what that means and how to fix it, so if someone could explain it. Also, I'm not sure what i'm looking for with the 'ls /lib/modules' listing.

Hardware specs:
Mobo: Biostar K8M800-M7A (I think this is a VIA chipset)
CPU: AMD Sempron 64 3000+
Tuner: Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150MCE

OK... I did some trouble shooting. I took out my tuner card and hard drive and placed them both into another (crappier) box that I have. Installation worked and it detected my Tuner card (YAY!!). I continued MythTV setup and found out how it is supposed to look when it actually works. Now I have a new problem (as well as still having my old problem): I tried to watch TV and all I got on all inputs was snow. This card (physically) has 2 coax inputs (FM and TV), an RCA input (with audio), and an S-Video input. It recognizes (in software) 2 Tuner inputs, 2 s-video inputs, and 4 component inputs. I mapped all of the inputs to the channel listing I got from DirectData (to test them all) still, nothing but static (but at least I'm getting static!)

So, I have 2 questions:

First, what caused the card not to be recognized in my original setup (and how can I fix it)? Was it the motherboard (the motherboard I put it in also has a VIA chipset)? Should I just return it and buy a new one? What chipset would you recommend?

Last, why am I only getting static (and how can I fix it)? Please post links to solutions.

Sometimes which slot you put the card in matters. Other than that it's very strange for the card not to be detected at all. If you're looking at a new motherboard, the most common chipset recommendations are Nvidia for Athlon CPUs and Intel for Intel CPUs.

As for the input connections, you should only associate the "Video Source" with the one you're using to get your signal. Otherwise the software doesn't know which input to use and will pick one arbitrarily (and usually get it wrong). Classic rookie mistake, I did it too way back when.

I would agree with tjc, try another slot. I've seen pci network/video/sounds cards that won't in one slot work just fine in another. You might also want to try looking in your BIOS for an option to "reset ESCD" or "reset configuration data". I've seen motherboards that get kinda stuck and don't got looking for new stuff--note: this is not the same thing as resetting or clearing the BIOS

While many people are reporting problems with VIA chipsets, othere have had some success.

The issue with the inputs is that all of them only give me static. I started with only one input associated with one source (Tuner 0 -> GMU). When that gave me only static, I associated all inputs with the same source so that I could cycle through them and see which one actually gives me a channel. All of them only gave me static. Any thoughts?

And associating all of them didn't make it any better did it? You've now got (at least) two problems. After you fix the associations, the next thing to look at is your "frequency set". If you're in NTSC-M territory (*) like the US or Canada, there are currently 3 choices:

- us-broadcast - Use this if you're hooked to an OTA antenna
- us-cable - Use this for most cable systems
- us-cable-hrc - Use this for the rest

There is also another standard which is very close to us-cable, called us-cable-irc. This will be supported directly in MythTV 0.19 but for now you need to use the fine tuning settings. If you don't have the right frequency set your channel numbers won't correspond to the correct frequencies, and you'll get nothing but snow, static or a black screen. You can either call you cable company and ask them what frequency set they're using or experiment.
