I have a 160GB HD that has a 1.1/2.0 interface. It works properly as a 2.0 HD under XP, but when I connect it to my KnoppMyth box (I am hoping to use it for my recordings partition) it comes up as 1.1 which is far too slow...

Is there anything unusual about getting a 2.0 USB HD to work under Debian? How can I ensure the kernel is seeing the ports as USB2?

Thanks,
-Jeff

in order to use usb2.0 you have to have the ehci driver loaded. as root do a lsmod | grep ehci and see if anything comes up.

lsmod | grep ehci

returns nothing

dmesg | grep usb

returns:

root@mythtv:/home/mythtv# dmesg | grep usb
usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs
usb.c: registered new driver hub
usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.275 $ time 17:47:40 Oct 2 2003
usb-uhci.c: High bandwidth mode enabled
usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0x2440, IRQ 16
usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports
usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1
usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0x2460, IRQ 19
usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports
usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 2
usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver
root@mythtv:/home/mythtv#

So ehci is the 2.0 driver? How can I enable it to load at boot time?

Thanks!

-Jeff

probably the easiest way is to run modconf as root then go down to usb/host then down to ehci-hcd then enter. once it says it succesfully installed the module all should be good. it will take care of having it load on boot thereafter.

I loaded it from work, will try the drive when I get home.

Thanks for the great tip. I didn't know of modconf before. Great tool.
