That's a little anoying, because I assumed it had that feature. It's not a deal breaker, but it bugs me just the same! I wonder if there's any way to get access to the other channels or if there are actualy missing chips on the board?

(This is a repost. The first one seems to have gotten mislinked to some Via related thread. WTH?)

Time for some searching. I seem to remember seeing, either here or in the MythTV users mailing list, something about the loss of SPDIF capability being related to a change in the sound chip.

Hmmm... Here is something on volume control...

Aha! Here it is uspposedly direct from Chaintech. See post #6 in this thread:

Doesnt help much. :) From the messages there, it implies that the newer boards dont have the SPDIF header but *do* have 6 channel sound, however I dont have any idea how you actualy get the 6 channels? The manual mentions something about "AC Link"..

Also I've been having some stability problems with my setup: intermittent video and audio glitching, and it seems to be partialy or completely crashed when I leave it on all night. It could be just my Hauppage 250 card though.

This is my first post, however i have been reading the forums for several months and am extremely excited at how well my knoppmyth install has been working. My sincerest thanks to everyone involved in this great project.

I have the same symptoms as above with my chaintech 7nif2 onboard sound. The audio output sounds fine, but is fixed at one volume.

audio output device: /dev/dsp
use internal volume controls is checked
mixer device: /dev/mixer
mixer controls: PCM

changing the volume in mythtv doesnt affect the level except 0% acts like mute.

alsamixer shows PCM with only one option, mute.

alsamixer reports
Card: NVidia nForce2 Chip: C-Media Electronics CMI9739

I also tried unchecking "use internal volume controls" which resulted in no changes at all to volume, even at 0%.

My 7nif2 is a few months old refurb from newegg.com ($30!!!). It appears to be the newer 6 channel revision that has no spdif header (just traces) on the board.

I dont necessarily need to use the onboard volume control, but it would be nice... I hope my feedback helps diagnose the issue. I'm gonna keep looking into ALSA, but i dont have much experience with multimedia in linux... (bash, however, is my friend :)

Edit: After more research this appears to be a known issue in the ALSA camp... http://edseek.com/archives/2004/03/03/c ... no-volume/

Edit again: looks like there is a software volume plugin for alsa in the works, but i have no idea how to go about installing it. http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/al ... ugins.html

This may be related to ALSA... I'll try and get it hammer out in my next R5 alpha build...

Can anyone recall if the 7NIF2 on-board sound issue has been resoved in any release of R5 Alpha. In my case I get sound from the on-board source but not able to control from Myth. I have a SB in a PCI slot but will go to on-board if there was a fix that I missed...

Can someone point me in the right direction. No success on searches.

I had the same problem and this worked:

settings were:

audio output device: /dev/dsp
use internal volume controls is checked
mixer device: /dev/mixer
mixer controls: PCM

I changed:

mixer controls: PCM

To

mixer controls: Master

and now I can change the volume of "watch tv" with my grey remote... yea! I have to use the colored buttons though not sure why?

I still can't change the volume when I watch a DVD though...

I had the same with normal audio.

I just changed the Setup/general/audio Mixer Contols to use Master.

Works great!
