thank you, I will download nano. I've already gone through the vi tutorial and its seems fine. The way the commands work is just a little 'abnormal' for me, but I am getting used to it.

The only entry in my etc/mythtv/modules/bttv file is
Code:
alias char-major-81     videodev

Should there be more? In that same directory, there are several other files: bttv0, bttv1, bttv2, bttv3, ivtv, ivtv0, ivtv1, ivtv2, ivtv3. Should those all be there?

No, there should be more as that is the default. If you need to specify a tuner type, etc then you;d add more. Yes, those files should be there.

In many of the posts that I've read thus far, some refer to /etc/mythtv/modules/bttv and some refer to /etc/modutiles/bttv. What is the difference?

the difference is that /etc/modutils/bttv does not exist in the default install of knoppmyth. instead there is an include line in the /etc/modutils/knoppmyth file that points to /etc/mythtv/modules/bttv

So which one should I edit? Do I need to create the /etc/modutils/bttv file? One post which I was planning on following says to create or edit the /etc/modutils/bttv file. If I just edit or create that file, is there anything else I need to do? Will MythTV pick up on options in the /etc/modutils/bttv file?

well you could edit that file, and it will pick up on the edits, but I would suggest you edit the /etc/mythtv/modules/bttv file as that's the way the system was designed, and if you create a new file then you may have conflicting information in the two files, and confuse the system, because it will parse both files at that point.

well, the current /etc/mythtv/modules/bttv file has only one line:
Code:
alias char-major-81     videodev

Should that still matter?

Would you happen to have any links to the proper syntax for the bttv file?

what I meant by 'should that still matter' is could I still create a etc/modutils/bttv file since the default one only has that one line? The only reason I'm leaning towards doing that is because of this link: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2433

just make the /etc/mythtv/modules/bttv file look like the one in that post. there is no need to create a new file in /etc/modutils/

Well, I made the file /etc/mythtv/modules/bttv look like the one in the post, ran update-modules, and then fired up xawtv from x and got green and a bit of static at the top. Same story in MythTV. There is a little more static and less green now, but that's about it. I even when so far as to create a bttv file that is exactly the same in /etc/modutils/, but that also had no effect.

The tuner card is a WinTV GO. It reads NTSC 44801 REV D153 on the tuner part of the card.

What else can I check?

Any other suggestions, or is that it?

the newer wintv go cards use a conexant chip, look on the board itself and see if the black chip says conexant, and if it does you are basically SOL. there is an experimental alpha level driver for it, but I haven't heard much luck getting it to work with mythtv.

yep, conexant. Bummer. Recommended models? One for experimenting, and one for serious use (also, which ones are the easiest to set up)...

okay... i am having the EXACT same problem with the green and they grey (when this tuner is the only one in the machine) Now i looked at the chip on the front of it and it says
Quote:
CONEXANT
FUSION 878A
25878-13
0426Y1AC
0427 TIWAN

But here's the thing. It used to work with mythtv just fine before i formatted. Now i can't get it to work though.
