Hello,

I had been encountering choppy/stuttering DVD playback and soon realized from threads that DMA on the DVD drive should be enabled. Using the command hdparm /dev/dvd, I confirmed that DMA was off. I then checked my BIOS and sure enough, DMA was not enabled. I then enabled it and checked /dev/dvd after reboot to confirm that DMA was now enabled so I thought all would be good.

With DMA on, I then attempted to play the DVD and still found the same problem. Upon checking I found that DMA had been turned back off from 1 to 0 so I am not sure what does this.

1) Is there a configuration setting somewhere that changes this value?
or
2) Does xine make these kind of changes when it runs?
or
3) Do I have to set something with hdparm -X in order to prevent this
or
4) Is anyone aware of some magic that may happen in the IDE controller to cause this to happen on its own?

Any help would be appreciated.
