Post subject:  switching from nForce to new video card... how?

Hello all, my first install worked perfectly, and because I couldn't wait for my video card to get here, I did the install without it. My nForce integrated video doesn't have s-video out, but it worked fine outputting to my 19" LCD.

So now I'm trying to switch over to the new card (GeForce FX 5500). When I put it in the system and reboot, I don't get any usable video signals from any of the 3 video outs (1 nForce, 2 GeForce)... the main output from the GeForce shows some weird artifacts on the screen, but nothing else.

So my question is: how can I migrate from my current nForce setup, which works, to using my new GeForce 5500, and how can I tell exactly what is going wrong during the boot-up process?

I probably didn't include all the relevant information... shoves in the right direction are appreciated.

For figuring out what is going on see - http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CheckingLogFiles especially on the X log file.

For a sample XF86Config-4 see - http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=XF86ConfigForFX5200HowTo which is known to work with FX5500 as well as FX5200 cards for NTSC users. YMMV but it's a reasonable place to start.

Finally I'm guessing that if you can't disable the onboard video in BIOS, you may need to set it's PCI BusID in the XF86Config-4 to force the drivers to use the right card. You'll have to search for how to use lspci to get that and translate the number to the form the BusID line needs. For AGP this is usually:
Code:
BusID      "PCI:1:0:0"

I just got around to spending some more time on this after reading what you wrote and I copied the nvidia-tvout sample (which looks like the one you linked) XF86Config over and changed the BusID to 2 and everything is working great! Thanks for the info!
