So, after getting my AMD Athlon 3000+ (combined frontend/backend) finally displaying through DVI to my HDTV, I am wondering if the new cheap Intel based 1.5GHz Solo Core Mac mini would be sufficient for HD playback as a frontend.

The cost difference for me to get the Dual Core is significant since I could buy through an employee purchase program and the discount for the solo core is significantly better than the dual core.

Thanks

It'll require a port, I don't think the current binaries for OSX will work on the Intel core boxen they're building now.

Pretty coold stuff on the disk less mini. Still couldn't find anything about HD video outputs on the Intel based mini hardware.

Check out the "Digital HDTVs", "Audio" and "TV Tips" sections:

Yeah, one of the reasons I think a mini would make a great frontend is because I am sure the DVI output could display nicely on the TV, but what I still can't figure out is does the CPU/Video Card combo have the horse power to decode an MPEG2 file at 1920x1080i or 1280x720p?

My current PPC Mac mini has DVI out and I'm sure will hook up and display to my TV, but I know it won't play the HD test mpeg I got from the pcHDTV site without jitters.

From what I've read, the new Intel Minis are supposed to handle HDTV just fine. The older ones probably can't.

Hi,

If HD is borderline what about SD? Can anyone suggest a minimum configuration Mac Mini to run a frontend for SD based on a set up you have running. I don't want to go diskless, just run a precompiled frontend application from within OSX. I'm keen to hear of how low a spec mini you could get away with so that I can grab something cheap from eBay.
