Post subject: | DVI output on Asus A8N-VM CSM motherboard - DOES WORK! |
Has anyone got the DVI port to work on the Asus A8N-VM CSM motherboard? I've got the VGA port working - outputting 1080i HDTV, no less! But, I don't know how to turn on the DVI port. I built a Mythtv box for a friend. He has a DLP projector and would like to use the DVI output on the motherboard to drive it. Eric |

In the exact same boat you're in. install goes fine, since the netcardconfig hasn't been run yet it can't resolve nvidia.com - X fails to load with (7174 default driver) Code: Screen(s) Found, but none have usable configuration
Fatal server error: No Screens Found running netcardconfig sets up network no problem, I install-nvidia.sh 1.0-8178 -force and it seems to go ok, reboot then blank screen. I've tried loading my old XF86Config-4 which worked for my a7n8x-vm but I still get the blank screen. grrrr I'll post if I make any headway. |

Hi, Thanks for your response. So, all I need to do is add the following to my Config-4 file in order to turn on the DVI output: Code: Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
I'll try it! Can it be that simple?? The other part of your message you were talking about getting nvidia drivers to work. I got them working so that issue is solved. How? I had to learn how to deal with the initial x-windows crash when the nvidia driver that KnoppMyth has as default, fails. In my case, when the install crashes with the non-functional nvidia 7174 driver, I open a shell window and type 'dhclinet' for a quick and easy DHCP IP connection. Then I use WGET to go get the newest 'pkg1.run' driver package from nvidia. (You'll find that the KnoppMyth script 'usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-debian.sh' is already outdated and crashes with any nvidia driver of version 1.0-8756 or newer.) Once the pkg1.run file is on your hard drive you just type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-????-pkg1.run" to install the new driver. Eric |

THis is pretty funny. we're at basically the same stage with the install. anyway, yeah- I saw that line for ConnectedMonitor at nvnews and was pretty happy with it. I'm SSH'd into the machine here in the livingroom- as soon as I gave the '/etc/init.d/gdm restart' command I got the X desktop with the shell askinng me for the root password. I still haven't figured out why I can't get my 1368x768 modeline working.. oh well, it's all about the noodling. The wife is convinced I like tweaking on this machine more than I actually like watching TV.. |

So, what resolutions are you able to get working from the DVI port? Just the basic computer resolutions (1024x768, etc.)? I went to this page and tried both of their 1080i modelines on my friends Mitsubishi projector. Both worked. http://www.linuxis.us/linux/media/howto ... ation.html I don't see the resolution you want listed there. Is that a custom resolution for a projector you have? To date, I've only run my Mythtv system on a 1024x768 LCD monitor. My next step is the 1080i output from the VGA connector to a Sony 1270Q projector. Did you discover that you needed ALSA drivers 1.0.11 to get your onboard audio to quit squeeling? I did that sound update enough times that I finally wrote a script to do it for me. (I posted it in one of these forums). Eric |

I did indeed, in fact I used your script last night, Thanks for putting it up there. so far, everything is working. total number of hours to get the a8n-vm csm on it's feet was about 4. I'd still class it as a tier 2.75 since the bios needed to be flashed and all of the extra driver updates. most of the time was spent trying to figure out the 'ConnectedMonitor" issue. I tried the DVI-edit. I added only the Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP" line to the Config-4 rile, stopped gdm, restarted gdm and there was no video out the VGA port or the DVI port after that. ![]() So, I commented out that line and restarted everything - back to functionality again. What is that section at the end of your Config-4 file do? Is that part of the DVI turn-on? Code: Section "DRI"
Mode 0666 EndSection When you turn on the DVI port, does the motherboard send video out both the VGA port (analog) and DVI (digital) at the same time? All modelines I've seen posted on the web have 24 bit as their default setting. What happens when you make 32 bit the default setting? Mushroom cloud?? ![]() Thus far I've left the screen brand and model identifiers in the Config-4 file at their defaults. I see you have too. I guess they must not matter to the machine? Thus far, I've been using the pre-loaded Myth themes only. I don't know how to load 3rd party themes yet. Eric |

I added only the Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP" line to the Config-4 rile, stopped gdm, restarted gdm and there was no video out the VGA port or the DVI port after that. ![]() So, I commented out that line and restarted everything - back to functionality again. hmmm.. one question- is your output currently going to a VGA/CRT or is it going to the friend's DLP? That would be why "ConnectedMonitor" didn't work for you. "DFP" is Digital Flat Panel a.k.a. LCD- I don't have any DLP experience so ??.. The only thing I might suggest is adding the "IgnoreEDID" "TRUE" ?? (note placement in my config) the DLP may be sending BS info and your video driver is handling it wrong? regardless, you should post your XF86Config-4 for all to have a looky. neutron68 wrote: What is that section at the end of your Config-4 file do? The current (working) output is 1080i HDTV via the motherboard's VGA connector to my friend's Mitsubishi DLP projector. Ideally, we'd like to turn on the DVI port and send digital video. This page says that DFP is the option that will address the DVI port. http://www.sorgonet.com/linux/nv-online/help.html There is no DLP listed. CRT is to address the VGA port. The /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file I've been experimenting with is on my friend's machine. I don't think I can copy the whole file to this forum via SSH (Putty), can I? I can only copy and paste one Putty screen at a time. I started with the default KnoppMyth Config-4 file and have added modelines and Option lines. It has the Option "DMPS" "true" in the Monitor section. I added the Option "Connected Monitor" "DFP" under the Screen section - and then commented it out after it didn't work to turn on the DVI port. If your card supports TwinView, you should be able to set Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT, DFP" and have it drive both. This is what I got working last night: Code: Driver "nvidia" You could get away with less stuff in there, but I had devices of two different resolutions, so I had to force some settings.

It doesn't relate to DVI output and modelines, does it? nvidia 8178 is now an outdated driver with broken XvMC. I wouldn't use it. Also, that script doesn't work for any nvidia driver newer than 8178. It downloads the nvidia file, but crashes before the new nvidia driver can be installed - even if you use the force switch. Nvidia now has their own installer you download that installs and configures the driver for you. Use WGET to fetch the pkg1.run file. When it is on your hard drive you just type: "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-xxxx-pkg1.run" to install the new driver. Eric |

Finger51: You said you are using the DVI port for output. Are you using a DVI to VGA adapter or are you using a dedicated DVI cable with DVI connectors on both ends? I've heard that a DVI to VGA adapter is really only passing the analog VGA singals through the DVI connector in that configuration. I retried the DFP option line last night. It did not give the Mitsubishi DLP projector a signal on the DVI port. At the same time, that DFP option line stopped the output to the VGA connector. (I note that Finger51 has his "DFP option" line down in the SCREEN section and Nigel has his up in MONITOR section. Linux doesn't care where they are in the file?) Then, I added the dual monitor option lines that were mentioned above. They did turn on the VGA port output, but the DVI still had no signal. With the projector connected to the DVI port on the motherboard, I looked in the XFree86 log and the CRT0 port shows the Samsung CRT monitor connected to it, but the DFP0 port shows nothing connected to it. If I plug the Mitsubishi projector into the VGA connector, the XFree86 log shows a Mitsubishi 3000 projector connected to CRT0. So, I believe this shows that the Mitsubishi projector communicates with the graphics chip ok. If the DVI port were alive, the Mitsubishi projector would give some feedback to the DFP0 port and it would show that in the XFree86 file. Eric |
