I get the same problem after a clean auto-install of either r5b7 or r5c7. After installing, ejecting the cd and rebooting the nvidia drivers install. Eventually it says "starting gnome" (or something similar) and presents me with a blank screen.

I have tried all three possible outputs (dvi, vga and s-video), all are blank. The machine does not respond to pings. ctrl-alt-f1 (or f2, f3 etc) do nothing.

I have only recently bought the 7900GT. R5b7 installed fine with the old card (6600GT). Interestingly, the previous install worked fine after swapping in the new card. It was only after I tried a fresh install (to update to r5c7) that the problem occurred. Naturally I tried to go back to r5b7 only to find the same problem there.

I've used the cd and mounted the drive to check the logs, but nothing jumped out at me in either "/var/log/dmesg" or "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".

Help?

Updating the nvidia drivers may help, the ones installed by default are quite old now.

Hi
Try the old 6600 card, also did you select tv out on a pvr-350? Did you have an IP assigned so you know what to ping?

Installing the latest nvidia drivers worked. It was a pain to install though... had to boot from livecd, mount hda, edit /etc/inittab to runlevel 1 and reboot. After that I was presented with a login prompt, but the screen kept filling with an error message (something about hub and error -110) so I couldn't see what I was typing. Some careful typing from memory and I had the usb with the new drivers mounted, copied the drivers to hd and then ran the install.

Knoppmyth R5C7 also fixed my reception problems with a certain channel so I'm happy now.

Incidentally, why does knoppmyth load the gui at runlevels less than 5?

Why couldn't you use one of the alternate virtual consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1 through F6)?

Or bring it up in single user mode like this? http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10189

Did you try booting to runlevel 1 and installing the latest nvidia drivers from their website?
