I just got an Nvidia FX 5200 128 MB AGP at microcenter for $59 (after rebate. I installed the card and booted up without a problem.

I replaced the /etc/X11/XF86Config with /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.nvidia-tvout.sample then restarted again.

For right now, I am just working on VGA. when trying to watch a recording, I just get a blank screen. What else do I need to do to be able to watch recordings on my monitor?

Hint...
tvout.sample

You'll need to edit the file(XF86Config-4) since "tvout.sample" if telling the card to output to a tv via svideo. Just commenting Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV" should do it, but I'd recommend commenting all the "TV" options...

No I hadn't run the install-nvidia.sh. I just ran in now and it apparently setup up the drive. I get the NVIDIA logo when X come up. However, I still can't get any picture when trying to view recordings. The front end just hangs, on a blank screen. Does it matter that this is a recording from a PVR-250 (Mpeg II)?

I'm still using /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.nvidia-tvout.sample as my /etc/X11/XF86Config

The tvout.sample is for after running install-nvidia.sh as it is configured to use nvidia not nv as the driver. I HIGHLY recommend installing nVidia's binary driver. If after running the script you still get nothing, I suggest you run the frontend from an xterm and try to view the recording. If you are still getting a blacnk screen, exit the frontend and look at what was outputted. Also check the backend log, search the forum and check the mythtv archive if need be...

reinstalled the Nvidia driver - it starts up and I get get the mythfrontend but still not video. When running the frontend I get an error related to sound (http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1035) but that is it.

For right now, I'm using the basic XF86Config. should I be using another file if not the .nvdia-tvout.sample?

you need to look at that sound error, I know it sounds wonky, but sound errors WILL keep video from playing.

Seems like you have a problem w/ your soundcard... There are enough posts on the forum to help you to resolve this... Running the script should generate an XF86Config-4 for your card and monitor. Use that, the tvout.sample is just that a sample. Copying it over XF86Config-4 should work in most cases(use that your own risk), but it is just a sample.

Thanks for all the advice. I replaced my sound card with an SB Live from another machine. I resintalled KnoppMyth and the Nvidia driver. I can get a picture now altough it i a bit soft (and off center). Is this something that I shoudl try to fix with the XFree86Config file?

The other question I have is about xvmc . I have run mythfrontend, is xvmc something that would help. By my understanding, I can use it now that I have a nvidia card.

well both of your questions depend on which nvidia card you have. if you have gf3 or earlier you need to use nvtv to adjust the picture, and xvmc won't do any good. If you have gf4mx or newer then you can adjust overscan in XF86Config file, and the xvmc does work, although it only works for mpeg2 cards so if you don't have a pvr or equivalent card it won't do you any good, or if you are transcoding to mpeg4 to save space it won't do you any good.

I have an NVidia FX 5200 AGP 128 Meg and a PVR 250 so I figured that I would benefit from xvmc,

i ran install-i686-x and then restarted.

When I opened mythfrontend and tried to watch TV or a recording, the screen when blue and then the system just froze.

I have since tried to revert to the non xvmc but that isn't working...

search the forums. to revert you have to remove all the xvmc packages and install the non xvmc ones. there is a thread about it somewhere. you do this with dpkg, but I can't remember the exact command lines.

basically the script is written to remove the i586 packages which are no longer installed cause the last script you ran removed and replaced them.

After searching the forum I figured that it would take less time to reinstall....

So I'm back to where I was before - more or less. I guess xvmc isn't for my setup?

well xvmc should work fine on your card, but It seems I remember some of the newer fx cards are not supported by the driver release that comes with knoppmyth, however nvidia broke lots of stuff with the newer versions, which is why knoppmyth has the version it does.

Thanks,

I tried the latest driver from nvidia - which I think helped things a bit. It claims to have better support for VIA motherboards. I think that motion is a little more smooth and things are sharper when not moving. Not really much more stable for watching live TV. However, there is noticeable interlacing around fast moving items. Not sure how I can adjust this. I gave xvmc another shot but all I got was a blue scren. I guess I have to wait for better support.

Any hints on sharpening the picture up a bit?

on playback I used

kerneldeint, quickdnr
(denoise3d works great but it throws audio and video out of sink)

still the picture looks a little soft...

Adrian
