Hey folks, so I am building a dragon (with a few slight modifications.) I am using the K8 neo4 -F motherboad with the Zalman NM-NB47J heatsink over the northbridge. I am also using the ASUS Extreme N6200TC256/TD graphics card.

My problem is this, after I instaled the heatsink, I cannot get the graphics card into the pci-e slot. There is a capacitor on the card that sticks out over the heatsink. I cannot press the card down without moving the heatsink.

Can I move the heatsink diagonally over the chip? That is the only way I can see that it will work, but I do not want to screw up my board by overheating the northbridge either.

Please help, this is the first computer I have ever tried to build a computer. I dont know how to link or post a picture, so I threw a picture up on craigslist. Here is the link.

The edge of the heatsink edge is supposed to be parallel with the pci slots.


The heatsink still cuvers all of the metalic portion of the northbridge. What do you folks think I should do? Wort case I could re-install the fan. Thanks for the help.[/img]

I would put it back to the stock fan and heatsink, if you are not overclocking it then I woulnt worry about the NB getting too hot.

Keep it simple and dont do what you dont need to do.

It sure looks like you can put it diagonally: that's how Zalman shows it on their page for that heatsink:

Just to add my 2p worth...
Your Zalman northbridge fanless heatsink will cool effectively regardless of the angle. As long as there is contact over the middle of the northbridge chip. Ensure you are using thermal paste (I tend to use Arctic Silver 5) to ensure good heat transfer and all will be fine.

I've installed two of these in my own computers... one is on my NF7-S in my Mythbox and the other on my Windows pc.

The important bit is the making good contact between the chip and the heatsink so the heat transfer is effective.

Enjoy the reduced noise that the heatsink brings: those tiny 40mm fans are incredably noisy.

Thanks again for the help! I am not planning on overclocking, and so I will leave the heatsink on As-Is.

You can mount it diagonally, and it doesn't hurt to snip off a few fins with a dremel tool or hacksaw.
