Post subject: | XVMC on FX5200 vs. FX6200 |
I recently purchased a new video card (e-geforce FX6200) and the difference in XVMC performance compared to my powerspec FX5200 is significant. All observations made below are on R5A30.2 with nvidia's 8756 driver. 1. Front end will sometimes hang when the OSD is used with the FX5200. This never happens with the FX6200. 2. Playback of 480i content is totally smooth with the FX6200. The FX5200 shows quite a bit of "jitter". 3. While both result in reduced CPU utilization when XVMC is activated, the savings with FX6200 are much more pronounced. For example, wih the FX6200 playback of 480i content with bob2x deinterlace uses under 2% of my 3ghz Pentirum D930 CPU; using the FX5200 8% - 12% of the CPU is used for playback. With playing 1080i content with the FX6200 I see 30% CPU usage for the frontend; the FX5200 results in 50% CPU. All observations are based on watching on my 50" Samsung DLP via VGA output at 1280x720p. In all cases XVMC is activated. Have others observed such a dramatic difference in XVMC behavior across cards? I'm wondering if the difference is the FX6200 vs. FX5200 or the quality of the card. (Powerspec is sold by MicroCenter and I believe it is their store brand.) I will continue to use the FX6200 -- got it in sale at Fry's for $30, so it was cheap and it also has a DVI output which I will try connecting to the HDMI input of my TV soon. Marc |
