I recently installed R5C7 on my system:

MSI K8NGM2-FID
Athlon64 3000+
Hauppage PVR-150
Samsung SP2514N
Ahanix MCE302
Samsung SH-D162 DVD-ROM
Infineon DRAM (2GB)


I selected the Samsung DVD as it was supposed to be very quiet.

However, when watching DVDs the optical disk drive spins very rapidly, generating quite some noise.

Here's the output of hdparm -I /dev/dvd

I also experimented with hdparm -E 2 /dev/dvd but without success. It's still noisy when playing dvds.

In /etc/hdparm.conf I added the following lines:
/dev/dvd {
dma = on
interrupt_unmask = on
io32_support = 0
cd_speed = 2
}

It turned on DMA, but still: noisy.

I also replaced the SD-H162 by a NEC 3500AG... but same behavior.

Any idea what I could do to reduce the noise level?

the only way i know is with hdparm

like this

hdparm -E 2 /dev/hdc

i think you need to put the /dev/hd*
* being your dvd drive location.

It really depends on the brand and make of your optical drive. I had similar issues with my Plextor DVD-ROM drive.

The hdparm -E feature only slows down CD read speeds and not DVD read speeds. Some drives seem to ignore this parameter. For example it didn't seem to work at all on LG drives (but my Plextor supported it).

The speedcontrol.c programme works on NEC drives I discovered, but my Plextor ignored it completely.

Eventually I got a Toshiba DVD writer from a Freecom classic enclosure and that drive was very quiet with both CD and DVD media. No hdparm or speedcontrol.c tricks required.
