I am attempting to install KnoppMyth on the following setup:

Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz
1Gig RAM
PVR-250 Tuner
Nvidia FX5200 Graphics Card

The installation proceeded properly, I selected the i686 install and MythTV loaded fine as well as my tuner card. I am able to view cable tv on my computer monitor via the on-board VGA connection.

I'd like to install the video drivers for the nvidia card so I can connect the machine to the TV now, but this is where I run into problems.

I attempt to follow the instructions which say to:


<CTRL><ALT><F1>
log in as rooot.
cd /usr/src
tar xjvf kernel<TAB>
install-nv<TAB>
This will install the drivers and restart GDM.

And this works up to running the 'install-nvidia' script. It tells me: 'Error: No Nvidia VGA card detected'

I have struggled with this for a while and I'm hoping someone can help me out because I'm stuck. I can provide any additional information if necessary.

If not tell us the version of Knoppmyth you are using and the Nvidia driver version you are trying to install.

For whatever reason, the script isn't detecting the nvidia chipset. You can manual run the nvidia run.sh to install the driver in this case.

BTW - What does lspci show? You're looking for something like this:

I try to do a manual install of NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7471-pkg1.run after pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 thinking that would kill X, but the installer tells me XServer is still running, and quits.



lspci spits out:

0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 616FX blah blah blah

Which is the onboard graphics, and says nothing about an nvidia card, which leads me to believe it's not detecting it. Also, when booting up, the following is displayed, which I don't really understand:

SiS900: Already loaded
ivtv: Alreayd loaded
ignoring pci display device on 01:00.0

Bingo! Go into your BIOS and set it to detect the PCI graphics card first.

BTW - You really need to provide the full details when you're describing your hardware. If you'd say it was a PCI based video card you probably would have gotten a far more useful answer the first time out of the gate.

There's no setting in the BIOS to set the priority like that. I've read the entire BIOS chapter in the motherboard manual and it mentions nothing like that, which is strange.

I have an MSI 66IFM2 board with Phoenix Award BIOS v2.0 030705.

The only option I can find is 'Init First' and my options are either PCI or AGP, and I set that to PCI and the same issue occurs.

If you are lucky all you may have to do is turn off the computer and remove the VGA connection and plug in the SVideo Cable to your TV. Then try and power up your system and see if it automatically detects the TV signal instead of the VGA connection. You should see the FX5200 logo screen in the top left corner of the TV when it first starts up..

Well that should be the setting you want. As RacerX suggested it may be looking for a connected monitor to be taken seriously.

I've given that a shot with a different monitors and the TV with no luck.

Is there a way in Knoppix to force it to detect the card, or not ignore it? Would installing the nvidia drivers cause it to recognize the card or would that not help?

Not wanting to teach anyone to suck eggs but in your BIOS have you tried turing off the onboard graphics?

I would imgaine it would be under something like Intergrated Periphals.

There may be a jumper (?) you need to swap over physically, though double check your mobo user guide. I find those user manuals are all to often extremely cryptic only telling you you can enable or disable an option so some deduction and emailing MSI might be in order.

Having ferrited out a pdf of your mobo manual... It certainly isn't clear what you should be setting to enable the AGP slot.
I would have certainly tried what you have:


So you've tried AGP? (Sorry have to ask.) And saved BIOS on exit?
All very strange. Email MSI if you can't find a solution.

Just wondering, have you booted up with the VGA/Monitor plugged in to the Nvidia card?
Is the nVidia an AGP card?
Most motherboards will only support one AGP video adapter at a time, which includes the on-board video as well as plugin cards. The bios will pick the first adapter that has a cable plugged in to it

I have a Dell (older flavor) that goes stupid like that. All I did was change the xserver Driver from ati,sis,i810,vesa, I forget exactly which, to nvidia then killall gdm, startx to check it, ctl c, then restarted gdm. The nvidia card was in the dmesg, not sure if also in lspci

Yes, I tried this as well to no avail. The nVidia card is PCI, so there shouldn't be an issue with having two AGP cards set up. I'm going to contact MSI about disabling the on boad video, however:

mjl, do you remember the file name/location of the xserver driver you're talking about?

Thanks for the help, by the way. This is frustrating to have everything working but not be able to plug it into the TV as intended!
