Post subject:  pvr-350 question

I have just discovered this site and mythtv and I am looking at hardware for a PVR. I have a question regarding video inputs like the PVR-350. I want to be able to do picture in a picture and/or record a program while viewing a program. I want to use the MPEG 2 encoding feature that the card has and the as well as the video out that the card has to drive my TV. My question is will I need mutiple pvr-350s or could I get a pvr-250 or pvr-500 in additon to the 350. Sorry if this is a newbie question and thanks in advance.

You only need one 350 to output to the TV. The other card(s) can be 150, 250 or 500.

Thanks! Your answer brings up another question. Will the one 350 handle mpeg 2 encoding for the other cards? Or how is that handled?

No

Those other cards have their own MPEG2 encoder(s).

Just an FYI, I started out with a 350 and ended up buying a FX-5200 for the video out. The video out on the 350 is horrible for watching anything except live tv or tv recordings. If you want good looking video playback (like stuff downloaded online...) you are going to want to go with a video card instead of the video out the on 350. Also, the 350 requires extra tangles of wire on the back of the computer that sort of suck.

Now I wish I would have saved my money and bought a couple 150s or a 500 instead of the 350...

just my $.02

Really? Stuff I playback with mplayer looks great on my pvr-350. Could you describe what about yours looks bad?

When I was watching DVDs, downloaded content, etc. whenever there was action it would be blurry or pixelized. It gave me a headache...
