I have searched everywhere for the answer to my question - but cannot fimd it. All I see is how to get video to the TV out connection on this card. Using knoppmyth setup I see when I select the 350 out it defaults to video16. What is video16? Where is this port?

How do I make my 350 output to my monitor over the PCI bus - does anyone know ?

You can't do what you are asking.

The pvr-350 is not a videocard like you would normaly use to drive a computer monitor. It is a hardware mpeg playback card. It can be used to display the xserver because of a "backdoor" in the design. By using DMA writes over the PCI bus the xserver desktop can be displayed on the pvr-350's outputs. It doesn't produce the RGB signals that are required for a monitor.

video16 is just a artifact of the ivytv driver. The driver uses certain videoXX "devices" to interface with different aspects of the pvr card lineup.

Why can't you use a normal nvidia or integrated graphics card to drive your monitor?

Thanks for the speedy reply. My question was poorly formed. I understand that the pvr-350 is an encoder/decoder card, I just want to know how I get the output from that card to my monitor over the PCI bus through my existing graphics adaptor which is on my Matsonic 7038ET motherboard which I believe is an SiS 630E.
Hope this clarifies what I am trying to do. Perhaps this is what the system should do by default. It does not do so for me as far as I can tell - since the decoding loses frames and their attendant blocks of sound - I think the decoding is being done without the 350. I have no way of telling however since I cannot find anything which explicitly explains how this should work

You can't use the pvr-350's hardware decoding feature unless you also use its video output feature. There is no way to do what you are asking. You can still playback the recordings without the pvr-350.

Hi lonlerny.

I think there is some confusion here. It "sounds like" you chose to use tv out when you were doing the install which will give you a composite video signal to go to a regular video as in a vcr, tv or modulator.

It again "sounds like" to me you simply want to watch tv / recordings on you computer monitor and not wish to connect to a tv monitor. Somewhere, check the wiki maybe or do a search as I don't which script you can run which will re-run the menu setup and allow you to say no, which will then allow output to the computer monitor.

The file you will need to change is : /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
I think the setup may be re-involked with one of the scripts although I have not tried them.

You will only be using the hardware encoder of the 350 card when recording. The decoder is only used when doing a tv playout via the dongle cable. I am not sure saved videos even use the hardware decoder but I don't believe so. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than I, can shed a bit more details.

Ans: OK, then this must be a limitation of the code in Linux since the card does play out to the graphics adaptor attached monitor in windoze. When you say
"There is no way to do what you are asking", Ryan you must be referring to the fact that nobody has assembled the code to do this under Linux. Is that the case? I'm not criticizing, I'm trying to get to the bottom of this issue. I base this assumption on the fact that I can watch live TV in Windoze with this card. Or is it the case that under windoze they are routing the output to a software decoder and then to the graphics card - and not using the 350's decoder

(b) Run the scripts to enable the TV-Out for the pvr-350.

Exactly. You can do the same with Myth by unticking the 'Use PVR350 Hardware' option.
