Post subject:  Video Pauses

When I am watching watching movies on my frontend (using Xine), the video and sound will periodically halt for a few seconds and then begin again. This probably happens about once or twice per hour of video.

What is causing this? Is my backend or frontend the culprit? Both computers are wired connected to the network, so I would not think that network speed is the issue.

Hardware:
Backend - Athlon XP1900+, 256MB RAM, 1.15TB across 4 Parallel HDs (200GB, 250GB, 300GB, 400GB), PVR-350, PVR-150

Frontend - Athlon XP2800+, 512MB RAM, FX5200, 10GB HD (PATA)

Knoppmyth R5A30.2 on both boxes

Any Suggestions?

Copy a video that does this directly to your frontend and play it locally. If you still get pauses, it's definitely not the backend. If you get no pauses, then it's probably not the frontend. The next step would be to use your system in a way that normally causes pausing, and check system load (by running 'top') on the backend and frontend to see if either system is overloaded in terms of RAM usage, CPU, etc.

Also, wow: 1.15TB for NTSC recordings? Very bold :)

Great troubleshooting suggestions, thanks I will try them.

Bold? Why?

btw, it's not just for NTSC recordings, it's also for dvd images ;-)
