Ok,

So I got an old ATI RAGE Pro card from a friend with composite video output. It displays to the TV fine (well, clear picture, but not centered on the screen) during bootup, but once MythTV starts it gets all scrambled.
I've gone into the XF86Config-4 file and played with the settings a bit, but haven't gotten it to work.

Should I keep playing with this card? Or would I be better off dropping $50 on a new ATI or NVIDIA from COMPUSA?

here's what I have for the screen section right now:

Code:
Section "Monitor"
   Identifier   "MyTV"
#   Option   "DPMS"   "true"

#   VertRefresh  50.0 - 75.0 # Very conservative. May flicker.
#   VertRefresh  50.0 - 62.0 # Extreme conservative. Will flicker. TFT default.
   HorizSync 30-50
   VertRefresh 60
   # 640x480 @ 60Hz (Industry standard) hsync: 31.5kHz
   ModeLine "640x480"    25.2  640  656  752  800    480  490  492  525 -hsync -vsync
   # 800x600 @ 60Hz (VESA) hsync: 37.9kHz

EndSection

Section "Device"

I would recommend picking up a new Nvidia card with DVI and Svideo outputs. The FX5200 based ones are known to work well for AGP or PCI, the 6200 based ones for PCIe. The DVI part of the recommendation has to do with the fact that this seems to be linked to cards that have better line driver circuitry which produces more "in spec" voltage levels for TV output. This helps even if you have to use an S-Video to Composite adapter.

BTW - If you haven't seen the hardware section on the wiki, it's time for a visit. This is all covered there... http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=VideoCards

yeah.. I ran across that this morning.

If I do purchase a new card, will I have to re-install anything? or will drivers already be installed from my initial installation? or will an auto-update from the install CD install the drivers I need?

thanks

Most of the time it should autodetect the hardware change and install a driver. You may still need to reconfigure X via the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, but there are several canned examples around that you can just drop into place.
