Rebooting the system fixed the problem for about 20 hours. Today playback of recordings failed agian but caused mythfrontend to lock up.

I cleaned dust out of the case in case it has been over heating. I don't think there was enough to cause any problems.

So it looks like the firmware on the pvr-350 gets corupted after several hours.

Anybody have an idea?

Have you tried using the ivtvctl option to force reloading of the firmware? I know it's there but not how well it works...

That sounds like a good idea. I have updated the ivtv driver to 4.6 with change. The pvr-350 stopped recording sound last night, agian.
