Post subject:  Sound not working after R5D1 upgrade(chanitech av-710)SOLVED

Hello, I just upgraded to R5D1 and have managed to get everything up and running like it was on R5C7 except that I'm not getting any sound at all. I had been using the optical spdif out and passthrough was woking well.

Things I've tried:

copying over my old asound.conf (based on the dragon one) - this was all I had to do after upgrading from R5B7

setting the audio output to dsp and testing with a stereo y cable.

Copying a fresh asound.conf from the dragon folder (which appears to be new since the last time I looked at it)

Checking the alsamixer settings, which is when I noticed the default card was set to via 8237. I've confirmed the onboard sound is disabled in the bios, so this shouldn't be showing up at all, right?

aplay -l showed that both the via 8237 and my chantech were showing up, with the via at card0

Now, I don't recall ever seeing the 8237 chip before, and I haven't changed any bios settings since my last install, so what could be going on here? Is there a way to disable the 8237 chip in software easily? am I even on the right track?

Thanks in advance.

Just comparing notes, in case it helps.....

I have a near-dragon (same mobo, same audio card), with the mobo sound disabled.
I'm working fine after R5D1, and while the sound worked right away, I did have to copy my old asound.conf (based on dragon) in order to get XINE to work right.

Here's my aplay:
Code:
root@mythtv:/var/log# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: AV710 [Chaintech AV-710], device 0: ICE1724 [ICE1724]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: AV710 [Chaintech AV-710], device 1: IEC1724 IEC958 [IEC1724 IEC958]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Thanks for the comparison, I guess that confirms that my install is acting screwy.

I'm not really that versed in linux device managment, does anyone know how to disable that via sound chip in software?

Ok, so after figuring out that the av-710 was card1 and not card0 I tried the adps1 setting for sound output in myth and it worked for live tv. For xine I had to edit my asound.conf file and replace any references of hw(0,1) with hw(1,1). After those two steps sound was working for both tv and xine.

I still have no idea what caused this however or why the new version behaved differently. I see this more as a workaround than and actual fix, so I'd still appreciate hearing any thoughts you people have on what could have casued it or how to get rid of the other device.

Thanks for your help thornsoft!

Just as a final follow up, I've tried going back to R5C7 and confirmed that only the chaintech card shows up, so this problem is not present. For the record my motherboard is an MSI K8MM-V (VIA K8M800).
