I've got a never used ASUS V9400-X/TD/64 AGP video card with VGA, DVI, and TV out. Does anyone know of any shortcomings of this card with Knoppmyth? I'm thinking of buying an ECS RS400-A motherboard to install it in. Is anybody familiar with this motherboard? It has a Realtek ALC655 audio chipset, any known issues with that? The nice thing about this motherboard is that it has both AGP and PCI-E slot. I really don't want to blow money on a video card, but at least this board won't be a total loss if the ASUS card turns out to be broken. I've got a case, power supply, the ASUS video card, and a bunch of drives int the 80-200GB range. I'd like to spend less than $250 to turn this into a Mythtv box. |

Is there any definitive reference site that documents what chipsets are compatible with Linux? I totally understand the difficulty in keeping the Knoppmyth Wiki up to date so I'm looking for more of a general reference. I looked through the motherboards on the Wiki, but they all appear to be too old or too new. I'm looking for a motherboard with either onboard TV out or an AGP slot because I don't want to buy a PCI Express video card, but I want a motherboard that I can buy new from newegg.com, not used from ebay or some fly-by-night website. The ECS RS400-A looks promising supporting a 64 bit dual core CPU and providing and AGP slot and a PCI Express slot but I would really like to know whether the North Bridge/South Bridge chipsets are supported. It's ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 and ATi SB400. Is there an online database of Linux chipset support anywhere? Just searching Google seems to only turn up forum posts where people as clueless as I am speculate on whether one distribution or another will work. Is there any central point of reference? |

Let me be frank. I have tried to build a system on an ECS motherboard on three different occasions. I was not successful in getting any of them to work. Each try encompassed multiple copies of the motherboard, the CPU, the RAM, and even the power supply. There is only one brand of motherboard on my "do not buy" list, and ECS is it. For any who may have gotten an ECS to work, I say "congratulations". |
