I'm still struggling over what motherboard to buy to bring an old machine back to life without spending an absurd amount. I'm about ready to give up on finding a motherboard that's "guaranteed" to work with Mythtv and simply try to get one that'll "probably" work.

The machine in question was running Windows before and if I can't get it to run Knoppmyth I'll just accept that it can run Windows again.

However, in the interests of giving myself the best chance of getting Knoppmyth working on it, I've gleaned the following sentiment from a myriad of postings Googled from around the corners of the Internet:

Avoid Via chipsets
Avoid ATI chipsets
Avoid ECS motherboards

Prefer NVidia chipsets
Prefer Asus motherboards
Prefer MSI motherboards

Is this an accurate assessment? Are there any particular NVidia chipsets to avoid? Any particular Asus or MSI motherboards to avoid?
