Post subject: | NVidia Upgrade Question |
So I just purchased an Nvidia card with s-video out. My Myth backend I want to move into a frontend box, but I am not sure how to upgrade it with the new Nvidia card. I know there are some scripts which allow for some features to be added to your Mythbox after the fact, but do these handle this sort of thing? Or do I need to raise the hood and tinker inside more? Unfortunately my time is limited as I was an idiot and thought it might be a good idea to go to law school. It wasn't. Kind of. Regardless, I have little time and would prefer not having to do a complete reinstall. Any recommendations would be great -- or any pointing in the right direction. Sincerely, JWN |

Unless you've done extensive customization an auto-upgrade should take under an hour. The upgrade itself takes under 30 minutes, the rest is prep and cleanup. If even that is too much time, you can try just plugging the card in, and on the next boot it should detect it and install the Nvidia drivers. You'll probably also end up having to fiddle with or replace the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. Unfortuantely you haven't provided enough details for us to give you better advice. (Current KM version installed, exisiting hardware and setup, ...) |

I'll provide more info hopefully in the next day. I am picking up a TV with an s-video input (first one I've had) and that should help. I am also picking up the card and really have no idea on the specifics of its specs. IT is some cut-rate thing. I will try and perform the upgrade and see if it goes. The XF86Config-4 file will be the real challenge. I have a Via board I was using as a front end, but I have given up on trying to get the black borders gone. The one thing I think I really miss is the ability to change the font-size on the Windows Manager. While TWM or Fluxbox is good, I think KDE handled that better the one time I got a KDE box working as a front end. That was brief before I accidentally broke it. D'oh. Sincerely, JWN |

I read through the upgrade hints and I am not itching to use them. Problem is: I just broke one of my Hauppage cards. Apparently a MicroATX board, two HDs, a DVD drive, one AGP video card, and three Hauppage cards do not work in an Antec Aria case. So .... frustrated ... I have decided to use the Antec Fusion case. I am ordering this as we speak. I hope it works. Holy cow. This stinks. Hehe. It does have a VFD, which could be interesting. Sincerely, Pacer |

Granted I've got way too much practice at it, but I can repeatably get through all of that in 30 minutes, and half of that is waiting for things to get copied from the CD, the MythTV .debs to get installed and the files and DB to get restored. It's like one of those old-fashioned sing along cartoons where you "just follow the bouncing ball". |
