Post subject: | MINIMUM ammount of V-Ram |
I want to use MythTV for watching videos over my network. What is the Minimum of V-Ram I will need for this? I am trying to cut costs on a video card with an S-Video port. I found one on E-Bay the other day that was $5 shipped with 8MB of V-Ram. 64MB Video Cards with S-Video are around $20 on Newegg. Will an offbrand work, or should I stick with something mainstream? Thanks! |

Depending on your experience with linux, I'd highly suggest sticking with an nvidia video card so that you don't have to worry too much about drivers and setup for s-video output. |

Weird, when I do a search on eBay for nvidia+s video or nvidia+s-video, nothing comes up. Anyone got a suggestion for a really cheap s-video card that works with Knopmyth? Thanks! |

Say something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814145095 or maybe this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814145067 See the wiki page for more general info: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=VideoCards BTW - You didn't say what kind of system bus you need AGP, PCI, or PCIe. |

Thanks a ton! How do I know if I have an "AGP" slot? I know that I have PCI, and there is a unused black slot that I have no clue what is for. I am running a Gateway Essential from the late 90's. Thanks! |

It would be in the manuals that came with your Gateway. At a guess that is probably an AGP (Advanced Graphcs Processor) slot, but if it's unused, what are you doing for video right now? Something on the motherboard? |

I thought it was a PCI card, it is the same type of slot that the ethernet card goes into. |

Gotta love the way Gateway and Dell shave every penny they can out of these boxes... Well in anycase you need to figure out what kind you need before we can make any more meaningful recommendations. |

Turns out I have an AGP slot! I ended up buying a this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125191 It was less than $35 shipped and has composite out so I will not have to buy an S-Video adapter. Thanks for all of your help! |
