Post subject:  Memory requirements
Right now my myth box has 512M of ram. However, when I check the System Info, it almost always shows less than 1% ram free. Is this normal? Should I bother adding more ram? I'm currently not using the system for HD, but might in the future. I also currently only have one tuner in it. Would I need more ram if I add another tuner? TIA!

The way I see it, you're new to *nix heh? :)

Don't be afraid, as Linux doesnt manage the memory the same way Windows (yikes) does. It simply uses more ram for the disk cache, which is a good thing. Whenever an application needs moe ram, it is simply freed. So don't be worried, you won't need another stick of ram for a while.

Relatively. I knew it preffered to keep everything in memory rather than swap. I'm jus' worried about it sitting at less than 1% free. Especially since I'm contemplating adding another tuner.

512Mb works great with two SDTV tuners and all the abuse I can dish out, more would be a waste. With HDTV up to 1Gb will improve performance, but beyond that it's not worth the money.

I use two DVB tuners for SDTV with only 256M of memory. PIP struggles a bit but I don't know if that is due to ram or perhaps processor (P4 2.4). Otherwise, it works great.

To clarify, those are the points where the benefit curves go completely flat, and beyond which there's just zero ROI for the extra cost. As Greg correctly points out, lots of folks are doing SDTV or better with multiple cards using 256Mb of RAM

I have two DVB-T cards in my P4 2.53 with 750MB RAM and I don't why I have that much as it runs fine.

Okay, I jus' upgraded R5D1 to 0.20. Now I'm using about 100M swap in addition to the 512M of ram. Is this normal? Or is it just a side effect of transcoding recordings?

I checked my box this morning, and I had 100MB free in ram, but I was using about 150MB of swap. Is this a 0.20 issue, or because I'm transcoding the files?

I'm still seeing up to half of my swap partition being used. I'm gonna upgrade my memory to 1G an' see if that fixes the problem. Any ideas why my machine would be using more than everyone elses? Or are y'alls machines constantly in swap?

Okay, I bumped my machine to 1G last night. When it first starts it uses about 600M. Then when it transcodes something, it jumps to 10M free. Hasn't used any swap though, so that's good.
