I think my hard drive is on the way out

The drive is making an ticking sound like its being accessed even when the hard drive light isnt on.

And I have heared that sound too many times before just before a drive shuffles off this mortal coil.

I have got these entries in the kernal log and the picture stutters and freezes when it was perfect before.

Hi,

Make an image and copy everything you can while you can... those kinds of noise and errors are not a good thing in my book.

To switch you have to change lilo.conf and the fstab to match partitions. Works best to boot from cd then chroot into it so you can run lilo -v after the changes.

Also run the "SMART" utilities to check the drives health. The smartcl man page should get you started:
man smartctl
Hi All,

Dont think its the Hard Drive HaraH!!!!

Recently changed motherboards, now got an Asrock 775i945GZ/m/asr with a intel 930 CPU, the motherboard was free and i shouldn't complain but i still feel robbed. I have been importing and selling motherboards for twenty years now and have never liked this brand!.

Anyhow down from my high horse, this motherboard's bios has a compatibility mode on the IDE which should in a perfect world convert the sata channels into IDE. Ideal for myth because you can do an auto install! Now as I said before it should do that but it dosn't myth ignores this setting completely and the ide remains the ide and the sata remains the sata.

The only thing turning compatability mode on does is to mess up the ide channels, with it enabled the hard drive will only run in PIO mode, the picture goes to crap and you get the errors above.

So if you are running this combination make sure you run the ide in enhanced mode!.

As the board only has one IDE channel I am using a samsung sata DVD Writer with this setup.

PS the ticking noise from the drive only started when I enabled SMART in the bios i think it may be the drive self testing when i get a chance I will turn it off and see if the noise goes away !!

Thanks all for your help !!
