Hi,
Am trying to get knoppmyth working on my brothers computer. He has a cable modem through optus.
He has installed R5D1 and gets all the way through the setup to where it asks about the network. He tries to use DHCP but it fails and when he tries to do it manually it also fails. He cannot get a network connection. He has plugged the modem directly into his network card.
We have tried entering the gateway IP address of the modem. Im unsure if this is what you do as when I installed on my computer I have adsl and it worked straightaway.
Is anyone else out there using Optus Cable successfully. Do we just skip networking for the time being and then after install edit the interface file. I did read something about Static Ip in the Wiki. If so what do we put in it for address of the following and how do i determine what they will be.
desired IP address ?
netmask ?
broadcast ?
gateway ?
Thanks

Dig, I don't have experience of Optus cable, but Telstra cable requires login software running on the PC to get the connection up.
If you don't have an external router that does this for you (i.e. another box between the modem and your PCs), then you might not be able to use KnoppMyth with this modem unless you compile the connection software.

Are you running his myth box directly from the cable modem normally or is the cable modem always only hooked directly to that machine? Or is there a router hooked to the cable modem? If a router, are there any other machines on your lan?
If you've got a router, then dhp should work fine unless that provider is adding weird constraints. I can't imagine why a provider would do that though.
If you don't have a router going, have you had any other boxes working off that cable modem or no? If yes, and they still work, check their settings. If no, check the providers web site for faqs. They might have a page up that sheds some light.
If you've got a router running, you should still be able to get a lan connection to the router from the myth box using dhcp. Any other box on the lan should be able to ping it unless the connection is just not working at all.
Did you make your own cable or did you use one with existing plugs on them? Does the network card light go on when it's plugged in?

Thanks for that guys. Looks like that will be the problem as he doesnt have a router at this stage. Ive got a 7402vgp on my machine so its a router modem combo and never had a worry.
I dont know anything about cable so will have to look at getting him a router. as it looks like this will solve the problem.
He has a main windows computer and we unplugged his windows machine and just plugged modem directly into the mythtv machine. He was going to get it working and then unplug the network and run like that till he got a router.
Will get a router and see if that helps. Thanks for the advice will let you know if it works.
Cheers,
Digriz

Routers are pretty cheap nowadays. You can get a decent linksys for well under $100. Not only are they great for sharing your cable connection, but they provide a built in firewall between your lan and the outside.
Some will even let you share printers.
