I don't know the linux commands, but have you tried using half duplex at GB speeds. I checked out the switch on Netgear's website but it doesn't mention what it supports in this regard.
Worth a try.

I took the plunge and upgraded to a gigabit network for my home. I bought the Netgear GS108 switch, and a couple of Trendnet nic's (Realtek RTL8169/8110) to throw in my Windoze and Ubuntu boxes. My Mythbox has an onboard gigabit interface, but is not working as such. Ethtool shows that it is capable of 1000Mbps, but it is set at 100Mbps. I researched online, and came up with this command: ethtool -s eth0 autoneg on speed 1000 duplex full but it doesn't seem to have any effect. I also tried: mii-tool -F 1000baseT-FD but that didn't seem to work either. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate any help! |

Are you using the right kind of cables? I seem to recall that you need CAT 5e or CAT 6 cables. |

The 10/100/1000baseT should be auto negotiated on the PC side unless manually set differently. At least that is how it works with my box after a generic knoppmyth install with the on-board ethernet interface. When I plug it into a PC with GigE, I get GigE. When I plug it into a PC with 100baseT only, I get 100baseT. I believe some routers are configurable for a maximum rate on a per-port basis. You might want to check that or at least verify that the port you are using will negotate GigE to another device. Also, I think long or poor cables will hinder negotiation to GigE. Allen |

The cables I have are CAT 5e, all laid with tender loving care, so I don't think that is an issue. Thanks for asking though! My Windoze and Ubuntu boxes transfer at 1000Mb/s. It's beyond me! But I love a good challenge. Maybe if I get a Christmas bonus I'll get a big honkin' HDD, and do a fresh install.

Couple of things you could try if you haven't already. Swap the cable with one of the other boxes that you know connects at GigaE speed. Again you could swap the port on the switch/router with one of the computers that connects at the desired speed. Doing these it will negate the problem being the switch/router and cable and put the onus back on the NIC or the OS. |
