Post subject:  No SVIDEO to TV on R5D1
Ok, I am out of ideas and think I've exhausted all possible threads to get this DVR working with SVideo to TV.

Specs:
KnoppMyth: R5D1
ABIT KT7 with AMD Athlon 800
300MB EIDE HD
SB LIVE Audio
NVidia GEForce MX440 (TV OUT SVideo)
Hauppage PVR 350 (TV IN)

I installed Knoppmyth R5D1 using a monitor. NVidia screen came up and was able to config the box. I made the changes to XF86Config-4 file for Option " Connected Monitor" " TV" and changed the settings HorizSync 30-50 Vert Refresh 60. Conneced the Coax cable (cable feed) to the PVR 350 and SVideo from the TV to the MX440 Nvidia card, rebooted. All I get is a blurry static screen with horizontal lines going up.

I reviewed the XF86Config-4 file and made additional changes to force SVideo but no change. But now I don't get video to my monitor. I need to get a termnial window to see anything (CTLR-ALT-F1). Upgraded the NVidia drivers by downloading and installing the latest linux driver ver 9629.

The new drivers installed correctly but did not fix the issue. I copied the XF86Config-4.sample TV out file and still no change. No Svideo via TV or nvidia splash screen using the monitor.

I checked the logs (dsmeg and message) and did not find any issues. Both cards are found and loaded without any errors.

I went to the extent in commenting out all resolution under monitor option except 800X600 and now I don't get anything. Not even a terminal window (CTRL-ATL-F1).

1. So for starters, how can I get to the XF86Config-4 to make change so I can at least get a terminal window to see via the monitor?
2. Does anyone have suggestion to t-shoot my issue. I don't know what else to do and wondering if the svideo interface is bad.

1) In my experience, if you specify "TV out" with Nvidia, output to your monitor will no longer work.

For newer chipsets and drivers, you don't have to specify, it will just work. I don't know exactly when nvidia started doing this, but I"m almost certain it was after the 440 line.

2) I'd start with the legacy driver.

This is essentially the same one I used with my previous Nforce2 IGPs embedded MX4 graphics.

Thanks for the feedback. I rechecked the logs again and did not see any issues on either card ( PVR 350 and Gforce MX440)
I used some sections of the XF86Config from your link but still don't get a clear picture. Just fuzzy black and white lines but I did see a some blurry object.

I am uncertain on which section provides the svideo config. On the link config the TVOutFormat SVIDEO is in both the Monitor and Device section. My XF86Config did not have the Device section which show the nvidia card. I included it and made modification (manufacture, board name) but still no change. I am also not sure of the Display size paratmeter but it did not work with or without.

Below is the bottom portion of my XF86Config. I think it seems right but at this point I have no idea.. My TV is NTSC-M (US). Do I need to do anything on the TV except change it to SVIDEO mode?
I am not concern about getting the monitor to work but any suggestion to the SVIDEO would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm.... You probably want to bump up that default color depth to 24, and you probably don't want to use "DPMS". Also don't forget to comment out the last line of that last Section... Finally, current best practice for modern Nvidia cards with their driver is to use the nvidia-settings utility to manage overscan.

I have done the changes to the XF86Config-4 and still faintly see the boot sequence and a menu. It is all black and white (more to gray side)and static lines through out the display. At this point I am thinking that the MX 440 SVideo output is bad and will verify by using the PVR 350's svideo out.

Is there a way I can change the TV out to the PVR 350 without a resintall? I figure it is a file modification. If the PVR 350 svideo does not work then it may be the TV input but if it does then I need a new video card for Svideo out. Now with the holiday hope I can put some more time to get this resolved.

I also have a MX440 with an svideo output that I have been trying to get to work. I do see some very fuzzy images of what I think is the bios POST when first booting up, but that's about it. But at that point linux doesn't even have anything to do with the display yet. No config file editing will help at that point, it should just work. That's been my experience with TV out in the past, you just plug it in, and it works. It seems these MX440s probably aren't the best card for svideo out.
