Post subject:  Anyone using Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS THX 7.1?

Hey everyone,

As I posted before I am trying to decide on a sound card which will work with Knoppmyth, but also allow me to connect to an optical connection on my receiver.

I am seriously considering the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS. First of all anyone using this card? If so - has anyone connected it to a receiver? Any issues or problems?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi, I had an audigy zx that I had intended to use with my mythbox, but as you need a mini jack to get digital out, and there was no oprical out, I bought a cheap 7.1 card which had dolby on it. I only use optical out to now.

Did you use a rca to optical converter? I knew about needing the mini-jack, but I am unclear on the best way to get from the rca connection to an optical connection.

Thanks for the reply and info!

No, I didn't even know you could get an optical converter. As I said, Initially I was expecting to use a coaxal out.
I gave up trying to work out the correct cable combination and bought a card that had an optical out on it.

Would you be able to advise on a good optical out card that works with Knoppmyth? I am trying to watch the budget as well...

The one I got only cost me 10GBP from http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106539

It does everything I need for watching TV. Myth recognised it immidiately. I had to turn on the correct channel in ALSAmixer as I'd had a different card in previously and it wouln't stick. An autoupgrade sorted that.

Hope this helps

Thank you so much for the advice. You probably just saved me a few bucks.

Am I thinking correct when I say that the signal from the card going across the optical connection to a receiver - the receiver decodes the signal and does the processing for the surround sound (5.1, 6.1, 7.1)? I know this went off topic here, but I wanted to make sure my thinking was correct.

Thanks again Tophee!

I'm not exactly sure, but on the soundcard quoted, I only use optical out having checked both passthrough boxed in setup. I only get stereo from broadcast TV, but my receiver upmixes that to 5.1 and native 5.1 from Dolby Digital or DTS is driven natively.
