Hi!

I am a totally linux newbe but I love mythtv. So I want to build my own system, but my knowledge about Linux is about zero.

Thats why I want to use Knoppmyth and a easy to install system. I just want to make sure that my system is easy to install, is quiet and will not be hot.

I used the search function to check the hardware in the tier 1 configuration of this form, but I could not find something usefull. :(

After a long time of research I'm thinking about setting up a system with the following configuration:
Silverstone LC-11M-300 Zilver
Asus M2N-VM DH socket AM2
- NVIDIA GeForce 6100
- nForce 430 chipset
- NVIDIA nForce® 430 built-in Gigabit MAC with external Broadcom PHY
- Wireless LAN: 54Mbps IEEE 802.11b/g (ASUS WiFi-AP Solo)
- ADI AD1988 8-channel High Definition Audio CODEC
AMD Athlon 3200+ Socket AM2
PQI DDR2 2x 256Mb PC5400 CL4
Samsung 250Gb SATAII 8Mb cache
Hauppauge PVR 500MCE Dual Tuner
LG Dual Layer DVD 16x +/- Burner
Arctic Silencer TC ultra

Before I buy all this hardware I would like to know if this system configuration will work. Is all the hardware supported by Linux? Will all the hardware be supported by the Knoppmyth kernel? Any tips or recommandations?

I have my doubts if all this hardware is supported by linux, I doubt especially about the ADI AD1988 sound chipset.

I would class it as a Tier2 as of R5D1.

But it seems that this motherboard could work properly. Do you think this is good solution?

Actually these look to be different sound chips AD1988 versus AD1986A, so I can't say for sure that it would work.
I have the Asus M2NPV-VM and apart from having to do the audio fixes it is really good. Mine doesn't have wireless onboard though.

Honestly I'd go with the M2NPV-VM. The only gotcha is that it only has 2 PCI slots. One for your wireless card (unless you go USB which is a thought) and one for your PVR 500. I have the M2NPV-VM with an AIR2PC HD5000 ATSC QAM Tuner and a PVR 500. If you're not planning on doing HD any time soon, you can probably scale back on the sempron, but the more CPU you have, the marrier. As a side note, I was doing standard def on a 800mhz Athlon, Nvidia 5200 (using xvmc) for around 2 years and it ran pretty well for that. All of your other hardware looks good however. There is a WIKI entry in progress for the M2NPV-VM if you buy that borad. I should have more data up on it in a few days..

You told me that I can scale back on the sempron. What is sempron? :?

If is supported. The only problem is that the alsa version has to be upgraded to allow for the sound to work on the system. This is the board that I am using and everything is going great.

Sempron is from AMD and is the power conservation minded processor. Also is lacks the 512KB L2 cashe (equipped with 128KB) that the AMD Athlon 64's have. (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_11599,00.html)

Just a reminder that this board can be picky with the ram it uses. Make sure the ram voltage is correct for the board. I think it take 1.9V ram and nothing else.

Within a few weeks I will enjoy knoppmyth! I hardly can´t wait.... 8)

I'm using Crucial Ballistix RAM with the board with no issues. I bought everything at newegg..
